New York City Marathon Winner — The running shoes they wore are here

If you were inspired by the 50th New York City Marathon, we don't blame you. From perfect fall weather to Shalane Flanagan making her sixth major world marathon appearance in six weeks, the magic of marathon day truly returned to the city yesterday.

In the women's race, Perez Jepchirchir made history by completing a double Olympic and New York Marathon. Jepchirchir's amazing victory in the marathon at the Tokyo Olympics in August made her the first woman to win Olympic and New York marathon gold in the same year.

Jepchirchir crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 22 minutes, and 39 seconds, trailing Ababelle Yeshane and Viola Cheptow as they turned onto the final straight in Central Park. This was the third-fastest finishing time in the history of the New York Marathon.

In the men's race, Mohamed El Araby and Eyoub Faneel led by a minute at the halfway point, but Albert Korir closed the gap to 45 seconds to take the lead. He continued to push in the final 10 km, winning the race by 44 seconds. The victory was Korir's first major world marathon title, and he finished in 2:08:22.

But what shoes were on the feet of both Jepchirchir and Korir as they ran across the finish line of the New York City Marathon? Both athletes are sponsored by Adidas, so on Sunday they were wearing the Adidas Adios Pro 2.0 (from $219 on Amazon).

This shoe has become a popular running shoe for podium finishes in recent races, and both Boston Marathon winners wore previous versions of this shoe. The Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 2 was released in June of this year and saw some major upgrades to the previous version. The upper was made from Adidas CELERMESH 2.0, and the midsole was replaced with a new design designed to reduce energy loss in the shoe.

The Adios Pro 2 uses Adidas' Light Strike cushioning in the midsole for race-day speed to protect the legs during long-distance road races such as the New York City Marathon. The shoes are lightweight and resilient, with carbon fiber plates designed to increase forward propulsion by allowing for a quicker toe-off at the start of the run.

The upper of the Celermesh 2.0 is designed to be extremely lightweight and breathable. Unlike the knit uppers of everyday running shoes, mesh does not hold sweat or water, so it dries quickly and does not weigh you down during a marathon. It is also designed to wrap around the foot, keeping it in place even when moving.

This is by no means an everyday running shoe, but if you are looking for a fast shoe to PR your next race, it is definitely a contender. If you're looking for a shoe on par with Nike, read our Nike Vaporfly Next% 2 vs Nike Alpha Fly Next% showdown.
