We loved the iPad mini 6 when it was released last month. But new rumors of an enhanced or even a Pro version sound even more exciting, if unsubstantiated.

A user on the Korean forum Clien (via FrontTron) cites a rumor from Taiwan that Apple is testing a new Samsung display for the new iPad mini. Not the most well-sourced rumor we've seen, but it seems at least plausible.

120Hz displays are becoming more common in tablets, but still tend to be found only on full-sized premium models like the iPad Pro and Samsung's Galaxy Tab S7. 120Hz refresh rates (ProMotion in Apple parlance) on a cheaper, smaller slate would help further differentiate the already excellent iPad mini from its rivals.

Apart from the refresh rate improvements, the post also mentions a few spec improvements. iPad mini's base storage is only 64GB, but this Pro model will apparently offer 128GB of storage by default. the A15 Bionic chipset and 8.3 inch display remains the same size.

With this change, rumors of a slight price increase are not surprising.

This is not the first time the iPad mini Pro has been rumored. A few months ago, there were rumors that an 8.7" iPad mini with 5G support would be released by the end of the year. That has not materialized, and no other rumors (not even this latest rumor) have been found to support its suggested specs. Perhaps this can be interpreted as a sign that Apple is trying to make an iPad mini Pro, but its exact size and spec list are not yet settled.

Shortly after its launch, iPad mini users began complaining about the "jerry-scroll" effect seen when scrolling back and forth with the tablet in portrait orientation. This is partly due to the fact that the screen only uses a 60 Hz refresh rate, so such users may be pleased to hear that a 120 Hz model may be on the way. Or they may resent the fact that they have already spent their money on a basic model.

The current iPad mini is the best iPad we have tested and the best tablet overall. So adding more storage and a smoother display would only enhance its standing. However, there was a two-year gap between the last iPad mini and this one's release, so we may have to wait a bit before Apple brings these new features to market, if at all.

The new iPad Pro is also said to be released in 2022 and will reportedly feature a notch to reduce the bezel.
