Earlier this year, Netflix announced that it was getting into the gaming business, and surprisingly, it is now rolling out, at least on Android.

Netflix officially announced in a press release that Netflix Games will be available on Android devices as part of its global rollout, and Netflix revealed in a tweet that a Games update for its iOS app is "in the works."

"Whether you crave a casual game that lets you start from scratch or an immersive experience that lets you delve deeper into your favorite stories, we want to start building a library of games that offer something for everyone," Netflix's Games Mike Verdu, vice president of development, said in a press release. We are in the early stages of creating an amazing gaming experience and are excited to take you on this journey."

To start, Netflix will have five mobile games.

No special membership is required to play the Netflix games. A regular membership is fine. Also, there are no ads, no additional fees, and thankfully, no in-app purchases.

Games are available in multiple languages and default to the language of the user's region. If a particular game does not yet support the language of that region, the default will be English.

Users with family members on the same account need not worry. Each user has a unique game profile, and users can play simultaneously on the same Netflix account. Some games do not even require a constant connection to the Internet.

At this time, Netflix is taking the casual gaming route. All games are playable on touchscreen devices, and there is no indication that controller support is coming.

In a financial report released in 2019, Netflix stated that it is losing more viewers to games like Fortnite than to competing movie services like HBO. Not only that, Netflix faces stiff competition from YouTube.
