Samsung Galaxy S22 design tipped with new rendering - here's how it looks

Few of Samsung's recent Galaxy S flagship phones have a separate design for the standard and plus-size models and the ultra version. However, it looks like that may be changing with the Galaxy S22.

Let's Go Digital says it has information from a former Samsung employee in Korea who goes by the handle Super Roader. And that source tells a Dutch blog that the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus will not feature the water-drop style lens reportedly on tap for the S22 Ultra. Rumors of its new S22 Ultra design appeared last month, along with concept drawings showing how the phone would look.

Instead, the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus are rumored to have a different design, more similar to the current Galaxy S21 look. Namely, the S22 will have a camera bump on the left side of the back and a triple camera lens array.

To help visualize what it might look like, Let's Go Digital posted a concept illustration by Italian digital artist Giuseppe Spinelli featuring a theoretical Galaxy S22.

Differentiating the design of the standard and Ultra models may be Samsung's starting point, but the move makes sense. Rumors suggest that the S22 Ultra will be treated like a successor to the Galaxy Note series and is expected to have a built-in S Pen. Therefore, Samsung may be trying to differentiate the S22 Ultra from other upcoming releases by giving it a different look.

It is also not as if the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus lose anything by adopting a similar design to the previous model. The Galaxy S21, released this year, introduced us to Samsung's contour-cut camera design. In this design, the phone's camera array blends seamlessly into the side of the device, making it less noticeable. This was one of our favorite design touches on the S21, so we're glad to see it make a return in Samsung's new phones next year.

Speaking of Samsung's rumored phone for next year, the Galaxy S22 Ultra seems to be getting the most attention, but the S22 could be a formidable flagship in its own right; the S22 will be slightly more compact than its predecessor and may be easier to handle with one hand. Samsung is also reportedly considering adding a front camera below the display and improving the rear camera to make photo colors more accurate.

The Galaxy S22 family is expected sometime in the first three months of the new year, possibly as soon as January. However, new rumors suggest that the phone's launch may be delayed to February to coincide with the Galaxy S21 FE launch.
