Apple has made security a major priority with the iPhone 13, but it appears the company wants to extend its reach to safety as well. According to a new report, Apple is looking into the possibility of adding car collision detection to some of its devices.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple's new safety feature is appropriately called "collision detection" and will work on both the iPhone and Apple Watch. This feature can detect car accidents and automatically call 911. Presumably, the feature will use the accelerometer already built into most Apple devices to detect the sudden stops that occur during car accidents. [Of course, Apple is not the first to try such a feature; Google launched its Personal Safety app at the same time as the Pixel 3 launch, which can detect car accidents and quickly call emergency services on the user's behalf. The Personal Safety app can detect car accidents and quickly call for emergency services on the user's behalf. It can also start recording when an emergency occurs, providing a more accurate record of the event that occurred. Meanwhile, GM's OnStar Guardian app also recently added the ability to detect collisions.

While it may not be a pioneer in this area, the Journal reports that Apple has been working on this for the past several years. Allegedly, Apple has been collecting anonymous data from iPhones and Apple Watches to improve its detection algorithms. To date, Apple has uncovered more than 10 million crashes and 50,000 calls to 911, the Journal reports.

Collision detection will not be the only emergency feature coming to modern Apple devices, however, as it has been built into the company's wrist gear since the Apple Watch 4. This useful service can alert emergency services and family members if a person fails to respond to a sudden fall within a certain amount of time.

As long as Apple can get the algorithm right, its collision detection feature could debut on multiple devices at some point in 2022, possibly on the iPhone 14.
