We already have a pretty good idea of what the iPhone 14 will look like when it finally ships next year. And we don't expect anything drastically different from the next Apple phone, except that the notch will be eliminated on the Pro model.

But that won't stop people from dreaming. One of the more bizarre ones is this sliding design by ConceptsiPhone.

As you can see, this concept imagines a world where the iPhone physically slides down the top panel to enlarge the screen and reveal a second panel underneath. However, this is only partially like the Nokia C6-00 from 2010, and it is not a full-sized second screen like the newly released Microsoft Surface Duo 2.

The video shows the iPhone 14 displaying news headlines, showing the settings menu, and offering a larger landscape keyboard. All very fancy, but ultimately a bit pointless.

I am reminded of the line from Jurassic Park: "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether it could or could not be done that they never stopped to consider whether it should be done. Because if this is Apple's answer to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 3, people are right to ask if the company's designers have abandoned their senses.

After all, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is desirable because it combines a phone and a small tablet into one. What this iPhone concept offers is at best a 1.5 phone, and the 0.5 part seems hard to use.

Of the purposes demonstrated, only the large keyboard has any practical use other than showing off. Even then, it would be better to use a physical BlackBerry-style keyboard rather than another touchscreen.

But there's a reason you don't see them much these days. Samsung used to offer a physical keyboard case for Galaxy S phones, but discontinued it with the Galaxy S8.

Given that the primary USP is straight out of Cloud Cuckoo Land, it may come as no surprise that the video doubly chooses to use "Air Charge Technology," meaning that the plug transmits power over the air. This is theoretically possible, but very wasteful. It is ironic, given that the headline on the cell phone front Apple News Plus talks about 85% of the world being affected by climate change.

Still, it's great to see Touch ID back and no notch in sight.

While this design doesn't look entirely likely, it is widely believed that it is only a matter of time before Apple offers us the iPhone Flip. However, according to Ming-Chi Kuo, as far as timelines go, we are looking at 2023 at the earliest. But when it finally arrives, you can bet Apple will come up with something much more practical than this particular concept.
