Google and Qualcomm are fixing the worst things about smart watches

Some of the best smartwatches for Android may soon see improvements. Specifically, smartwatches powered by Wear OS are on their way to significantly improved battery life, with Qualcomm's help.

During the Qualcomm Wearable Summit 2021, which he attended virtually, Google's Bjorn Kilburn offered insight into the direction of Wear OS smartwatches; although there was no mention of the Google Pixel Watch, Kilburn, said that Google and Qualcomm are working together on an "always-on experience that extends battery life."

When Google unveiled its new Wear OS at the I/O developer conference earlier this year, the software promised impressive battery life among other radical upgrades. As it stands, most of the best smartwatches do not overwhelm us in terms of stamina.

Samsung's Galaxy Watch 4 shipped with Wear OS but failed to live up to its battery life hype. In our tests, the Samsung watch lasted about a day under normal use. Therefore, future Wear OS smartwatches using Qualcomm's SoC may achieve the significant improvement in battery life that Google has been teasing.

According to Kilburn, the Wear OS platform is poised for success with an "ultra-low power co-processor," a chipset that offers superior battery life compared to some current smartwatches. Qualcomm's latest wearable processor is the Snapdragon 4100/4100+, which is found in smartwatches, including the Fossil Gen 6, which will be upgraded to the new Wear OS within the next year

. Neither Google nor Qualcomm has said whether the Snapdragon 4100 or another upcoming processor will deliver longer battery life. However, it is clear that the two companies' cooperation will result in the first Wear OS device with significantly longer charging intervals.

Currently, perhaps Fitbit's Best Watch and Garmin's Best Watch estimate the top battery life in the mainstream smartwatch market. Since the former brand operates under the Google umbrella, it is possible that Fitbit's premier device with Wear OS will be the long-lasting smartwatch we've been waiting for; the Fitbit Sense already lasts up to six days, but this is with limited display settings and GPS GPS consistently. We would love to see a smartwatch that lasts a full week with fewer restrictions.
