Dune 2 Release Date, Cast and Everything Else To Know About Dune Part 2

Spice addicts should rejoice in the confirmation that "Dune" Part 2 will indeed be made, as Legendary Pictures has broken the news that "Dune" Part 2 is indeed in the works. However, if you saw Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" - spoiler alert, we'll delve into the film's conclusion - it was clear that "Dune" Part 2 would be produced.

The desire to make a "Dune" Part 2 had been in the works for some time. At a screening attended by Tom's Guide staff, Villeneuve revealed that he not only intends to make "Dune 2," but also to make "Dune Messiah" after it. The film will essentially be a trilogy.

According to Deadline, "Dune" Part 2 is scheduled for October 20, 2023.

Villeneuve has already begun work on the script; in an August 2021 interview with Total Film, the director said, "I'm writing [part 2] now and I feel like I'm eight years old again. It is very unusual for me. There are moments of deep appreciation and deep joy when I watch my film and I say, 'Thank you, life.'

Dune Part Two was confirmed on Twitter by the official account of Legendary Pictures on October 26. This is just the beginning. Thank you to all who have experienced @dunemovie so far and to those who will be going in the days and weeks ahead. We are excited to continue our journey."

In a tweet announcing Dune Part Two, Legendary tagged the following cast members in the photo (you have to open the tweet and click on "Dune and 7 others").

The only problem is that the tweet tags two actors (David Dastmalchian as Piter de Vries and Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Dr. Rhett-Caines). Their characters may return in flashbacks in "Dune Part 2," but it is unknown.

Legendary also tagged Hans Zimmer, so we can expect his booming score to return as well.

Two other characters are expected to return: Paul's antagonist Fayed-Lauta (played by Sting in David Lynch's Dune) and Paul's sister, Aria.

But beware of spoilers below, as the events of "Dune" and "Dune Messiah" will come up.

Also, Rebecca Ferguson returns as Paul's mother, Lady Jessica. Stellan SkarsgÄrd will also likely return as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. Flashbacks are a possibility, but I don't expect the late Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) to return.

Jason Momoa will likely return as Duncan Idaho. Josh Brolin is also likely to return as Gurney Halleck. This is because he was not actually killed in Harkonnen's raid on Atreides Castle in Araquois. Tufia Hawat (Stephen McKinley Henderson) is also likely to return.

Characters from other "Dune" films may be cast in due course.

To discuss "Dune Part 2," we must first look at what happened at the end of "Dune." Paul and Jessica are on the run from Harkonnen when they finally meet the Freemen and Paul is able to see Chani, whom he saw in his vision. They are led to Stilgar, who takes them in. Jamis of the Fremen tribe opposes the call and fights Paul to the death, but Jamis is defeated.

This moment cannot be overlooked. In a vision Paul had during his fight with Jamis, he said, "Paul Atreides must die. If you take his life, you will take your own". While Paul may have been involved in the deaths of the men on the plane when he used his "voice" to free his mother from the gag, Jamis was the first person young Paul had killed in one-on-one combat, signaling Paul's own dehumanization.

What comes next is the question of how Paul will respond to the Freemen, who are devoted to him as messianic figures. His and Chani's visions suggest that he sees a future as a leader in their war, but Paul at present seems neither ready nor interested in taking such a path.

Meanwhile, on Arrakis, the Harkonen family has taken control of the situation. The baron passes command of the planet to his nephew Laban, but will he be able to make enough money in the spice trade to pay for the war he has undertaken with Sardaukar?

Paul eventually meets his new sister Aria and a new rival, Feyd-Lauta, but I will leave their details for another time.
