Battlefield 2042 has a new live-action trailer - and fans are roasting it

A new live-action trailer for "Battlefield 2042" has been released, but it has not been particularly well received by members of the "Battlefield" community. The trailer currently has nearly 2,000 likes on YouTube on YouTube, and the comments section has been scathing of the one-minute video.

The trailer itself realistically recreates various scenes from the game, set to a cover of Iggy Pop's iconic '70s track "Lust for Life." The trailer is quite tongue-in-cheek, and there is even a joke about Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady still being a professional football player in 2042 and winning the MVP.

While the trailer is no doubt intentionally comical, it has not been well received; a quick look at the YouTube comments section reveals that many fans have condemned the trailer. One highly rated post called it "physically painful," while another questioned, "What could be more cringe-worthy?"

One of the biggest complaints fans have about the trailer is that it does not fit the usual tone of the "Battlefield" franchise. Commentators have pointed out that the upbeat tone fits shooters like "Fortnite" and "Overwatch," while "Battlefield" has always been beloved for its more realistic, or at least video game realistic, war deception.

"R.I.P. Battlefield. It's been a long and good journey for us. But it ends here. Farewell, old friend," was one perhaps melodramatic comment.

Another reason for the trailer's criticism is its inconsistency with the previously explained lore of Battlefield 2042. In space, by 2042, Earth's natural resources have been severely depleted, and conflicts have broken out over water, food, medicine, and other supplies. It's a pretty grim future. But at the center of this trailer are grinning soldiers who proclaim, "What a time to be alive." It feels at odds with previous marketing materials.

Of course, the surprisingly strong backlash raises the question of whether fans are taking this trailer a little too seriously. After all, it is probably just a short promotional spot in the hopes that it will appeal to players of games like "Fortnite" and get them to play "Battlefield 2042" this winter. There is no indication that the comical tone of this trailer is present in the game itself.

"Battlefield 2042" will be released on November 19 on PS5, Xbox Series X, PC, and last-gen consoles. An open beta was held earlier this month, suggesting that while the game has multiplayer potential, there are a large number of bugs that need to be squashed before launch.
