The Tesla Model Y makes sense for those who like the look of the Tesla Model 3 but want something a little more solid. In effect, it's like a more upright, SUV-specific edition of the same car.

The similarities make for a car with plenty of range, a car loaded with cool, practical technology, and easy access to Tesla's ever-expanding Supercharging network.

While the latter option greatly enhances convenience, the Tesla Model Y is also a great choice if you need more space. Especially if you have a family and all the "baggage" that comes with having children.

The Tesla Model Y has the accommodating interior of other SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz GLC and BMW X3, but with the advantage of all-electric power and the rock-solid range to back it up. Here's why the Tesla Model Y is worth considering for those who care about EVs.

The Tesla Model Y starts at $56,990, $13,000 more than the least expensive Tesla Model 3. The obvious advantage, however, is that it gets all the added practicality of being an SUV-specific vehicle.

In other words, it rides more upright, has more space, can carry up to seven people, and more. If you're willing to spend more, the performance model costs $61,990.

Being able to spec a car to fit both your requirements and your budget is one of the great things about buying a Tesla. And even with a relatively basic model, the Tesla Model Y is a strong performer.

Thanks to its 72 kWh battery pack, this hatchback SUV can still get on the road fairly quickly. Both variants of the Model Y pack a punch, with the Long Range Battery Pack version taking 4.8 seconds from zero to 60 mph and reaching a top speed of 135 mph. [The Model Y Performance Edition delivers more muscular power with a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph.

What's not a bit crazy is the ability to use a cell phone as a replacement for a traditional key. In fact, the Tesla Model Y comes with solid technology such as heated seats and steering wheel, in addition to autopilot, app control, and wireless charging.

Elon Musk also confirmed that all FSD vehicles will have an "auto-shift" feature. Logically, this feature should eventually be included in the Model Y, but it is not yet clear when.

Tesla has also prioritized safety in its development, and the design of the Model Y follows that theme.
