"Scream 5" is a direct sequel to 2011's "Scream 4" and takes place 15 years after the original Ghostface murder. Sidney returns to Woodsboro to promote his self-help book. The day before, two high school students are murdered and evidence is found in Sidney's car, making her a suspect.

Sidney's cousin Jill Roberts and Jill's friend receive threatening phone calls. The case is investigated by Dewey, now the town sheriff. Despite his objections, Dewey's wife, Gail, also decides to investigate the murders on her own.

More murders occur, and at one point Gail is stabbed in the shoulder. Sydney struggles to protect her aunt Kate and cousin Jill. However, it turns out that there are actually two killers of Ghostface! The other is a high school movie buff named Charlie Walker. Jill covets Sidney's fame, while Charlie is obsessed with following the slasher movie formula.

Jill betrays and kills Charlie and stabs Sydney. She stabs her own ex-boyfriend in an attempt to turn him into Ghostface. When Sydney survives, Jill sneaks into the hospital room to finish her off, but Dewey, Gail, and Deputy Judy Hicks find her. When Jill is able to subdue them, it is up to Sydney to shoot her.
