What kind of running shoes did the Boston Marathon winner wear?

Benson Kipruto and Diana Chemtai Kipyeoge won the 125th Boston Marathon earlier today.

Kipruto crossed the finish line in the men's race with an unofficial time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 51 seconds. This was his first win in Boston and his third marathon win overall. Khemtai Kipyeoge won the women's race with an official time of 2 hours, 24 minutes, and 50 seconds. [It goes without saying that both athletes deserve praise, but the fact that they were both wearing the same shoes should not be overlooked.

Benson Kipruto, who effortlessly crossed the finish line, appeared to be wearing the Adidas Adizero Adios Pro "Bliss of the Sun." The Adizero Adios Pro was launched in October 2020 as Adidas' high-speed racing shoe. It has a carbon fiber plate, Light Strike midsole, and engineered mesh upper. It is ultra-lightweight, breathable, and designed to achieve PRs. She has helped many runners set new records, including a women's-only record in the half marathon... for the second time. [A new version of the adidas Adizero Adios Pro 2 was released this June with significant upgrades. The upper was made from Adidas CELERMESH 2.0 and the midsole was changed to a new design designed to reduce energy loss in the shoe.

When Diana Chemtai Kipyeoge took the lead from Edna Kiplagat and Mary Ngugi, she appeared to be wearing the same Adidas Adizero Adios Pro as Benson Kipruto.

The question remains, why do two runners appear to be wearing older versions of the shoes?

If you don't want to spend $220 on a pair of racing shoes, the Adidas Adizero Boston 10 is much more affordable at $140. The Boston 10 features the same Lighstrike Pro midsole and has enough cushioning for a race-day marathon shoe. The foot is stiffer than the Nike Vaporfly Next%, but the foot is snappy.
