Samsung Galaxy S22 charging speed can be a huge disappointment

Update: The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra will also be set to charge at 45 watts.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 is said to be getting a series of upgrades, but improved charging speed may not be one of them.

That is seemingly going by a screenshot of a listing from China's 3C technology regulator (via Weibo's WHYLAB) that shows three different Samsung phone models believed to be in the new Galaxy S22 range. The table shows that the phones can charge at a maximum of 25W, which is the same charging speed as the current Samsung Galaxy S21 line.

As can be seen in the screenshot provided by WHYLAB, the supposed Galaxy S22 models all have a maximum charging voltage of 11 volts and 2.25 amps. Multiplying these two together gives a wattage of 24.75W, which is the claimed speed of 25W.

There are also older rumors that the Galaxy S22 series may offer 45W or even 65W charging based on tests being conducted by Samsung. Another rumor claims that the Galaxy S22 Ultra can provide 45W of charging. However, these claims were not accompanied by a list of regulatory authorities to back them up, as is the case here. In other words, Samsung appears to have decided not to change anything after completing the experiment.

25W is an acceptable charging speed, especially if the phone in question has a smaller-than-average battery, as the Galaxy S22 is expected to have. However, it is not as good for larger models such as the Galaxy S22 Ultra (which is expected to use 5,000 mAh cells, like its predecessor).

Indeed, this charging speed exceeds the maximum 20W that can charge an iPhone 13. However, the upcoming Google Pixel 6 series is believed to offer 30W charging, which would leave the Galaxy S22 behind; the OnePlus 9 series' 65W charging and the Xiaomi 11T Pro's astounding 120W charging are two of the fastest charging phones currently available and both are bundled with chargers, but given that the Galaxy S21 did not offer a charger, it is likely that the Galaxy S22 will not.

Confusingly, Samsung has offered faster charging speeds before; the 2020 Galaxy S20 Ultra could charge at up to 45W if a separate charger was purchased, but Samsung did not offer this feature on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra after that and has since not offered it on the phone.

Fortunately, there are other rumors that make the Galaxy S22 series look like a worthwhile upgrade over the Galaxy S21, even if charging is not one of them. These include a new chip, presumably AMD-powered and armed with ray-tracing graphics, a built-in S Pen for the Ultra model, and an overall smaller size for easier handling for all three expected models.

Previous leaks have suggested that the Galaxy S22 will be released around January or February of next year. Therefore, it won't be too long before we see what Samsung does next with its flagship device.
