You can now release Oculus Quest2 from Facebook's grip— but there's a catch

The Oculus Quest 2 is a brilliantly versatile piece of hardware and deserves its place at the top of the list of the best VR headsets you can buy today. However, it does have the drawback of requiring a Facebook account to use it.

But despite some drawbacks, a workaround has emerged that frees Quest 2 from Facebook's clutches: the Facebook hater is a side-loadable tool that promises to sever the link between the social network and the Oculus Quest once and for all You can try Oculess.

As discovered by UploadVR, once Oculess is sideloaded, your Facebook account will no longer be linked, allowing you to enjoy the VR space on your own terms.

Of course, there are drawbacks to this, including no software updates from Facebook, no Oculus Store, and likely loss of access to software you have already purchased (the developers note in their notes that Virtual Desktop entitlement errors); Oculus TV and the Oculus browser will also cease to function, but the latter can be replaced by something like Firefox Reality, and there are plenty of other apps and games available that can be side-loaded.

That may sound like too many drawbacks; as someone who rarely uses Facebook, I don't think I'd jump all the way to disconnect Quest 2.

However, perhaps concerns about Facebook's questionable attitude toward privacy make me think that anyone who wants to give this a try should do so sooner rather than later. Facebook has a habit of cracking down on developers who disrupt intended use. As Lewis Barclay found out when he received both a ban and cease-and-desist letter for creating a Chrome extension that allowed him to unfollow all of his followers on the social network with a single click.

Facebook-linked or not, the Oculus Quest 2 remains a VR headset worth considering; the Oculus Quest 2 features an impressive and ever-growing library of downloadable VR experiences, but it is not a Half Life Alyx-like PC games can also be run via cable or WiFi.
