Google will unveil the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro at its launch event on October 19. However, the company has already provided so many details about the new models that one would wonder what there is to talk about.

The Google-designed Tensor chip in the Pixel 6 models. Google talked about it in August. We also know from Google that there will be two versions of the phone, with the larger one having three cameras. Color, screen size, display refresh rate, all of these have already been asked and answered. All that remains is the price and release date.

The few Pixel 6 details we don't know won't fill too much time at the Pixel Fall Launch event on October 19. So unless Google plans to call us in full to see the longest recap segment in history, you'd think the company would have something to show off besides the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro on that day.

That's where the Pixel Fold comes in.

The Pixel Fold is Google's rumored foldable device. Those who claim that Google is working on such a phone have been aware of the patents Google has obtained for various foldable designs, as well as the August 2020 leaked internal documents from August 2020 claiming that Google's 2021 plans include the Pixel 5a, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel Fold. The first of those phones is already on sale, and the next two more will be released this month. Only the Pixel Fold remains.

Furthermore, some fairly established leakers claim that Google will launch the Pixel Fold this year, and some even say that the Pixel Fold will appear with the two Pixel 6 models. What we do know is that if that 2021 target is accurate, there are only a limited number of days left on the calendar to achieve that goal.

In other words, there is a good chance that the Pixel Fold will appear at the Pixel event on October 19. For starters, the fact that it is specifically billed as a Pixel fall launch event would suggest that we are getting Pixel devices and Pixel devices only - Nest gear need not apply. Second, we already know so much about the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, leaving plenty of time for surprise products. And if Google suddenly announces Pixel Fold when you least expect it, you will sit up and take notice.

There is only one problem with this idea.

Usually at this time of year, when phones are about to go on sale, there would be a lot of details about the upcoming release. This is because handset makers outsource the assembly of their devices to their supply chains or outside factories, which creates the opportunity for many leaks to pop up. Google, in particular, has been particularly chatty about its phone plans, as its Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro launch campaigns have shown.

So one would think that if the Pixel Fold were to appear alongside these phones, we would have more concrete information at this point. Instead, it is mostly speculation and the occasional concept design. We believe the Pixel Fold will run on the same Tensor chip as the Pixel 6 models. But we know nothing of this, at least as far as we can learn anything about the unannounced device.

Then it seems unlikely that the Pixel Fold will be announced on October 19. You would think that development would have to be further along in order for this phone to be ready for release. But that doesn't mean that a foldable phone won't appear in some form, whether in the form of a teaser or a sneak preview.

After all, the long build-up to the Pixel 6's launch suggests that Google is not shy about talking about phones before they are released. Google revealed its Tensor chip in August, and these days you can't stream a show on Hulu without ads flashing before your eyes on the Pixel 6. As of this writing, we are more than a week away from the official launch of the phones.

Yes, there is plenty of time on the agenda for Google's fall Pixel launch event to discuss something other than the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The question is, is there anything else to discuss? At this point, I'm willing to bet that there is.
