With 2022 just around the corner, enthusiasm for the Galaxy S22 is already building. Samsung has reportedly confirmed that its upcoming Exynos 2200 system-on-chip, which may debut with the Galaxy S22, will support ray-tracing graphics in gaming in partnership with AMD.

Typically, Samsung uses Exynos chips for international models of its phones and Qualcomm chips for U.S.-bound models. If what we've heard about the Exynos 2200 is true, Qualcomm must have something seriously good in the works for the next Snapdragon 8 series of system-on-chips.

But what does ray tracing actually offer in mobile? As far as we know, not a single game available in the Play Store can take advantage of this technology. Developers will need time to either incorporate ray tracing options into existing games or develop new games with this technology as a possibility. There is no magic switch to enable ray tracing in a game just because you have the necessary hardware for ray tracing.

Samsung Galaxy S devices often have the best displays you can buy on a cell phone, but the fine detail that ray tracing typically provides may be a bit lost on a mobile device. We see the effects of ray tracing on TVs and monitors, not on cell phone screens. We are having a hard time figuring out how pronounced it will be in this form factor.

But there is more exciting things going on than just ray tracing. For us, this means a very powerful mobile GPU that could challenge Apple's dominance, and with AMD's help and their RDNA 2 architecture, the Exynos 2200 could become the industry leader in mobile gaming.

Whether all this will happen or not, we will have to wait and see. Worse, unless Samsung finally breaks up with Qualcomm, as Google did with the Pixel 6, it is unlikely that a Galaxy S22 with the Exynos 2200 will appear in the US. If the Exynos 2200 is as powerful as rumored, we sincerely hope that Samsung will let US buyers experience it.
