All of the iPhone 13 models have certainly impressed since their debut earlier this month. The iPhone 13 Pro Max, in particular, currently occupies the top spot on our Best Smartphones list, but all of the choices, including the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro mini, are great additions to Apple's lineup.

Still, anything made by human hands is bound to have flaws. And some initial problems have appeared with the iPhone 13.

The good news is that so far, none of the problems people are encountering seem to be - annoying as they may be - deal-breakers. Even better, they should be fixable with software updates, the first fixes being rolled out as we speak. But it's unclear when other software updates will arrive, and those who paid more than $699 will be forced to grin and bear with a few shortcomings in their new phones, at least for now.

Here is a summary of the biggest problems reported with the iPhone 13 so far. Check back for updates on when these issues will be fixed.

The ProMotion display on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max can raise the refresh rate to 120Hz if the on-screen action demands a smoother, more immersive experience. This is in theory. In practice, some third-party apps will not work properly at the iPhone 13 Pro's fast refresh rate.

Specifically, some apps combine 120Hz scrolling and full-screen transitions with 60Hz animations, creating an unpleasant visual experience; 9to5Mac reports that affected apps include the Apollo Reddit app.

The fix: There are two issues here. First, according to Apple, app makers need to put a flag in their software declaring support for 120Hz. Apple plans to clarify this requirement to developers. Second, Apple plans to fix bugs related to animations built using its core animation tools.

The new iPhones do not bring back Touch ID, so you may not be able to unlock with your fingerprint, but there is a workaround for unlocking if you are wearing a face mask and cannot use Face ID. The iOS 14.5 update earlier this year added the ability to unlock your phone while wearing a face mask if you are also wearing an Apple Watch.

That's pretty handy - unless you happen to be one of the unlucky iPhone 13 owners who discovered that the Apple Watch unlock trick no longer works on your new phone. Apple confirmed that in a note on its support page.

Fix: A software fix is now available. iOS 15.0.1 software update promises bug fixes and specifically calls out the Apple Watch unlock issue for iPhone 13 users. The accompanying watchOS 8 update should also be downloaded.

Several users say their new iPhones do not respond to taps. Specifically, sometimes it takes several taps before the iPhone recognizes the input. This issue occurs on the tap-to-wake and lock screens as well as on iOS as a whole. The top corners of the screen appear to be most susceptible to this issue.

Fix: This appears to be a software update, not a hardware issue with the iPhone 13. In fact, some iPhone 12 users have also reported this issue after upgrading to iOS 15. This leads us to believe that this will be fixed in a future iOS update.

This is a feature rather than a bug. iPhone 13 Pro models feature a new macro mode that uses the phone's 12MP ultrawide camera. When attempting to capture an object within 5.5 inches of the lens, the iPhone shifts from the main wide lens to the ultra-wide shooter. Apple states that this approach is better for capturing close-up details.

Not everyone agrees; Input reviewer Raymond Wong says the camera captures a different frame than what appears in the viewfinder, and the switch ruins the framing of the shot.

Fix: According to Apple, a future software update will allow iPhone 13 Pro owners to turn off this feature if they wish to prevent the camera from automatically switching to the ultra-wide angle camera when taking macro shots.
