Yesterday, the first reports emerged that the iPhone 13 Pro Max can actually charge faster than Apple has announced. The device is officially listed as having a 20W charging speed, but when connected to a higher rated charger, it recorded a speed of almost 27W, albeit with many variations.

Many other sources have now confirmed this, including the ChargerLAB YouTube channel and MyDrivers. This is an improvement over last year's iPhone 12 Pro Max, which 9to5Mac claims is capped at 22W on a 30W charger. What this means is that the iPhone 13 Pro Max can charge from zero to 100% within 90 minutes.

While Apple has narrowed the feature gap between the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max models, this shows a clear discrepancy between the two, as Twitter user @duanrui1205 reveals that the smaller iPhone 13 Pro has a 20W upper limit. Also, when using MagSafe wireless charging, it is expected to be even slower.

While clearly not the original intent, this somewhat justifies Apple's controversial decision not to bundle a charger with new devices after iPhone 12. Without a power brick in the box, you are free to go pick up any charger you like - although it's worth taking inventory of your existing chargers before you do so.

As The Verge points out, if you're already deeply embedded in the Apple ecosystem, you may have a new MacBook Air charger (30W) or MacBook Pro plug (61W) lying around. Of course, they don't have to have the Apple logo. If the charger doesn't specify the wattage, you can find out by multiplying the amperage by the voltage. [However, in the ChargerLAB video, the maximum output of the 30W charger for the iPhone 13 Pro Max is 18W (at 5:09 in the video).
