iPhone13Pro Max has a charging surprise

In our review of the iPhone 13 Pro Max, we were impressed by the improved battery life due to the larger battery pack, but somewhat disappointed by the lack of fast charging.

However, GizChina reports that the iPhone 13 Max can charge its 4,352 mAh battery to 48% in 30 minutes, and can do so with a charge of almost 27W. This is a bit odd given that Apple's charge rating is 20W, the same as the iPhone 12.

In other words, from this report (which we have not yet tested ourselves), it appears that the iPhone 13 Pro Max is actually charging at a faster pace and thus at a higher wattage than Apple claims. There is a caveat here, however.

GizChina's tests showed that by using a 96W charging head (those for the iPhone 13 Pro Max range from 5W to 96W), the top-of-the-line iPhone 13 device reaches a peak charging wattage of 26.6W. However, this varied considerably, sometimes dropping to 11 watts.

Nevertheless, the iPhone 13 Pro Max was able to fill the battery to 48% in 30 minutes and reached 84% after one hour of charging. This clearly indicates that some variability is occurring, but still shows a clear improvement in the charging capacity of the iPhone 13 Pro Max over the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

But to take advantage of this, you need a 30W charger, not Apple's 20W charger. And a 27W charge pales in comparison to the best Android phones, especially the OnePlus 9 Pro and Oppo Find X3 Pro.

However, this does indicate the possibility of faster charging in future iPhones, which we would love to see in the iPhone 14.
