The new iPhone 13 has received some notable upgrades, but the iPhone 14 appears likely to outshine this year's lineup. in his latest Power-On newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that next year's entry-level and Pro models will be "completely redesigned."

According to Gurman, the arguably minor changes to the iPhone 13 also mean that "Apple engineers have been working under the hood on bigger things that will take more time." And while at this stage we would normally take such claims with a pinch of salt, in many cases Garman has proven to be a reliable source of information about all things Apple.

One such major change has been noted several times to be the removal of the somewhat iconic, but also archaic, display notch seen on iPhone X and later iPhones; Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has previously stated that the notch will be completely report that the notch will likely be eliminated altogether on the iPhone 14, supporting Gurman's claims.

This could also mean that Cupertino may be planning to implement a hole-punch display design. This look has already been seen on many Samsung devices, including the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Samsung Galaxy S21. Leaker Jon Prosser has also made such a claim and has rendered images created based on the claimed leaks.

In other early iPhone 14 tidbits, Kuo added that a major camera system upgrade could also be on the horizon. According to analysts, next year's Pro model could sport a 48-megapixel wide camera lens. This would be a significant upgrade over the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max camera systems, both of which feature a 12M main camera lens.

Unfortunately, the long-awaited return of Touch ID may be off the table; Kuo previously noted that the under-display Touch ID sensor will not appear until 2023. The analyst claimed that this long wait may be related to "lower-than-expected development progress," noting that "this will also hurt iPhone shipments in 2022 and 2023."

But even if the Touch ID sensor is not added, the iPhone 14 may have the potential to rival some of the best phones on the market. If speculation is to be believed, next year's lineup could be good news for those who decided to forgo an upgrade this year. It is also possible that Cupertino will finally stop using the Lightning connection, as Apple is reportedly being forced to switch to USB-C charging in Europe.

This year's lineup did not see many upgrades, but a few additions such as Cinematic mode, an upgraded camera system, and a larger battery made the iPhone 13 worth considering. the Pro model includes up to 120Hz ProMotion display with adaptive refresh rate, which also made scrolling, swiping, and gameplay smoother.

However, such features are already available on competitors' phones, and rivals have outpaced Apple in implementing features that Cupertino has yet to introduce, such as foldable displays, hole-punch displays, and USB-C charging. Therefore, if Apple wants to catch up with its competitors, significant upgrades should be planned.
