The Ryder Cup is contested in three types of match play: foursomes, four-balls and singles.

In foursomes, teams of two take turns playing strokes, with the side with the lowest score on each hole winning. The side with the most holes played at the end of the round wins one point for the overall score.

In fore-ball, the two teams each hit their own ball, and the side with the best overall score wins that hole. Again, one point is awarded for each game.

In singles, both players play a standard match play format, with the lowest scoring player winning the hole and one point awarded for winning the most holes.

The total is 28 points, and 14½ points are needed to win the Ryder Cup outright.
