Microsoft Surface Pro X2021 Release Date, Price, and Specifications

Microsoft will slightly refresh the Surface Pro X. In 2021, Microsoft will add a Wi-Fi-only version of its ARM-based tablet and lower the starting price by $100.

Additionally, the Surface Pro X 2021 will incorporate Windows 11 and 64-bit emulation. Below is the rest of Microsoft's announcement at the event about the Surface Pro X, including its specs and when it will be available for purchase.

The Surface Pro X is available for pre-order starting at $899.99. Microsoft will offer an LTE-equipped model and a Wi-Fi only model. It will be available in platinum, with some configurations (the more expensive ones) also available in matte black.

The basic configuration is expected to be Wi-Fi only, with an SQ1 processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 128GB SSD; a Wi-Fi only version with an SQ2 processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD is expected to cost $1,399.

Like the previous Surface Pro X model, the new model will be compatible with the Surface Pro Signature Keyboard, Surface Pro keyboard, and Slim Pen 2.

Overall, there doesn't seem to be much difference between the 2021 Surface Pro X and the current model, other than the fact that Microsoft will offer a Wi-Fi only model for $100 less.

Like the original Surface Pro X, the new model will use Microsoft's ARM-based SQ-1 and SQ-2 processors and will run Windows 11 in both x86 and x64 emulation.

The Surface Pro X's 13-inch touchscreen has a resolution of 2880 x 1920 with a 3:2 aspect ratio and supports the Surface Pen, but this accessory must be purchased separately for $99.

Nothing new here; the Surface Pro X is 0.28 inches thick and weighs 1.7 pounds. The Surface Pro X has two USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports, but no Thunderbolt support. There is also a Surface Connect port for connecting to an external display, and the LTE version has a nano SIM card slot. there is no microSD card slot, and we need to look at the Surface Pro 8 for that.

On the front of the Pro X, as before, there is a 5MP webcam with Windows Hello authentication and the ability to record video at 1080p. The rear camera has a resolution of 10 MP and can record video in both 1080p and 4K.

The Surface Pro X has two far-field microphones and a 2-watt speaker with Dolby Audio.

Microsoft states that the new Surface Pro X 2021 will last up to 15 hours on a charge, the same as the previous generation. We will test this claim during our full review.

There is not much new in the 2021 Surface Pro X other than offering a new Wi-Fi-only model; the low starting price of $899 may attract more buyers.

The bigger issue is the number of applications that can run natively on ARM-based architectures. Microsoft advertises that Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, Shapr 3D, Zoom, Microsoft Office, and Microsoft Teams will run on the Surface Pro X, but people who do heavy photo editing on such a device Not many, though the Surface Pro X's ability to support both x86 and x64 emulation may help.

Still, the Surface Pro X faces an uphill climb against the similarly priced Surface Pro 7, which currently sells for $699 with comparable specs. While battery life is short, the Intel processor allows it to run all Windows apps natively. The new Surface Pro 8, which is even more powerful, will start at $1,099.
