As more commuters seek alternative modes of transportation, electric bikes like Rad Power's new RadCity 5 Plus are sure to gain popularity. The RadCity 5 Plus is slightly sleeker than its predecessor, the RadCity 4, has a slightly longer range, and is slightly more expensive.

Both RadCity 5 Plus models have a slightly thicker frame to accommodate the removable battery. Those in the know may think the 5 Plus looks more like the company's new RadRover 6 Plus fat tire bike. [The former is for riders 5'4" to 6'5", while the latter is best suited for riders 4'8" to 6'0".

In the center of the handlebar is a small LCD display that shows speed, distance traveled, and battery level. On the left handlebar is a smaller digital display and two buttons for adjusting the level of pedal assist. On the right side is a seven-speed mechanical shifter and twist throttle that can propel the bike unassisted up to 20 mph.

The RadCity 5 Plus, like the RadCity 4, has a 750W rear hub motor, but the company claims the new bike can climb hills 40% faster than before.

The battery is locked in place with a key and, cleverly, can also be used to charge other devices, whether or not they are connected to the bike. With an optional adapter, for example, a smartphone can be connected.

With a redesigned motor and tires, the Rad City 5 Plus has an 11% increase in range over the Rad City 4. Other improvements include hydraulic disc brakes and ceramic pads, which significantly improve braking power.

I had the opportunity to test drive the Rad City 5 Plus at Liberty State Park, and both models were very comfortable. However, both models sit in a very upright position, making for a very relaxed ride. A more thorough evaluation will be made in the coming weeks.

Among the best electric bicycles, the closest competitor to the RadCity 5 Plus appears to be Charge Bikes City.
