IKEA accessory39 Accessories turn your table into a wireless charger — here's how it works

Wireless charging is a useful technology found in many of the industry's leading flagship devices, such as Apple's new iPhone 13 and Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 3. While this feature is convenient to have, even the best wireless chargers can clutter up the workspace, as most use a pad that sits on a surface and a cable that powers the accessory.

Some manufacturers produce tables with built-in wireless chargers, but these extravagant products usually come with a hefty price tag. With IKEA's new Sjömärke accessory, however, there is no need to worry. This handy accessory costs only $38, can be attached to most tables from below, and provides wireless charging for cell phones placed on the desk.

The charging accessory is made of aluminum and plastic materials and measures 7 x 3 inches. Simply put, Sjömärke works over any table, whether plastic or wood, as long as it meets the basic requirements.

These requirements include a minimum distance of approximately three-eighths of an inch and a maximum distance of seven-eighths of an inch to function properly, so the tabletop thickness must fall within that range. However, most tables easily meet these dimensions, so you should have no problem getting the Shemerke under your table. (Just double-check the thickness of your table, to be sure.)

Sjömärke can be attached with the included double-sided tape, or secured with screws if you find the best location. Screw holes are provided, but screws are not included, so you will need to provide your own.

If you are wondering how to install the Suyomelke, you can find all the assembly instructions in the IKEA manual. The device also comes with a 6-foot-long power cable and several stickers to mark the mounting location. Once the charging pad is safely attached to the table, simply place your smartphone directly above the installation location. Make sure your smartphone supports wireless charging.

But tables are not the only surface to which Sjömärke can be attached. This accessory is versatile enough to be attached to side tables, bedside tables, shelves, etc.

And while you cannot see Sjömärke while it is in use, you can always check the charging status of your device with the LED indicator.

One thing to keep in mind is that although IKEA charging accessories are compatible with a wide variety of devices, they can only charge devices at 5W. This means that it takes longer to charge devices compared to other high-speed wireless chargers on the market. For reference, Apple's own MagSafe charger lineup currently offers up to 15W.

According to The Verge, Sjömärke will be available for purchase both in stores and online in the US and worldwide starting in October.

Even if the speed is slow, IKEA's wireless charging accessories are worth considering. It could also be a useful gift idea as the holiday season approaches.
