9 new Movies and TV Shows to Watch this weekend on Netflix, HBO Max, Peacock and more

The fall TV season has just begun, but already new movies and TV shows are popping up on Netflix, HBO Max, Peacock, and Hulu. It will really pick up next week after Sunday's Emmys, when the networks will announce their new lineups.

This weekend's offerings are diverse. Season 2 of "The Morning Show" is back with Awakenings and Chaos by Choice, and Season 3 of "Sex Education" is much the same. New school, new principal, same complicated love life. The series premiere of "Y: The Last Man" finally brings the post-apocalypse comic to the screen after a long development period. And Clint Eastwood presents his latest film, Cry Macho.

And that's not all: there are plenty of new TV shows and specials airing on broadcast and cable TV. If you've cut cable TV, you can sign up for one of the best cable TV alternatives to access your favorite channels.

Here are our picks for new movies and TV shows to watch this weekend.

Season 2 Premiere | Episode 1 (TV-MA) | How to Watch The Morning Show Online Apple TV Plus started out with Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon's faces plastered all over the place. The streaming company is essentially saying, "Look, we've got big bucks to score some really big stars." The show is set in the cutthroat world of morning news, and the titular show is a take on The Today Show. The first season was good, if uneven. Thanks to a great performance by Billy Crudup, who played a network executive, Apple TV Plus won its first Emmy early in its run. Season two lingered on the heels of an explosive finale in which anchors Alex Levy and Bradley Jackson exposed UBA's toxic workplace. Alex has quit the show, but Corey Ellison wants her back. Newcomers Hasan Minaj, Julianna Margulies, Holland Taylor, and Greta Lee cause more drama amid the chaos. [Series Premiere | Episodes 1-3 (TV-MA) | How to Watch Y: The Last Man OnlineFinally, Y: The Last Man has crawled out of the depths of development hell and emerged into the bright lights of streaming. The film adaptation of the popular comic has been in the works at FX since 2015. It finally arrived after showrunners and screenwriters were replaced and moved to Hulu's FX. Like the comic, the story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where all mammals with Y chromosomes have mysteriously died. The only exceptions are a man named Yorick Brown (Ben Schnetzer) and his pet monkey. Together with the survivors, they confront their new reality. Leading the way is Yorick's mother, Jennifer Brown (Diane Lane), the president of the United States.

Season 3 Premiere | Episodes 1-8 (TV-MA)| Watch Now School is back in session. Teenager Otis (Asa Butterfield) has casual sex and his mother Jean (Gillian Anderson) deals with pregnancy. Eric and Adam (Ncuti Gatwa and Connor Swindells) formalize their relationship, and Aimee (Aimee-Lou Wood) discovers feminism. Otis and Maeve's voicemail case is still unresolved. Moondale also has a new vice principal, Hope (Jemima Kirk), whose new philosophy and style turn the school upside down.

Film | 1 hr 43 min (PG-13) | Watch Now From its title, one can only assume that this is a Clint Eastwood film. He, of course, plays Mike Milo, a surly ex-Texas rodeo star. After suffering a career-ending injury, he begins training horses. His boss (Dwight Yoakam) fires him but gives him another job. He goes to Mexico and brings back his 13-year-old son Rafo (Eduardo Minnette). There, Mike discovers that Rafo leads a life of drinking, gambling, and cockfighting, and the two, along with Rafo's prized rooster Macho, go on the run from cops and menacing bodyguards. Their journey takes a surprising turn, and Mike's mission becomes less about saving Rapho and more about saving himself.

Series Premiere | Episodes 1-2 (TV-MA)| Watch Now BJ Novak's new anthology series explores hot topics of the moment, from cyber bullying to gun control to social justice. It is reminiscent of "Black Mirror," but with less focus on technology. Stories are culled from social media rather than from headlines. In one episode, an Instagram influencer (Laura Kirk) ponders the motives of the biggest trolls. In another episode, an embarrassing sex tape of a white man also captures footage of a black man (Jermaine Fowler) being beaten by a cop. Should Ethan (Ben Platt) prove that he is an ally by releasing the tape, or should he be humiliated?

Series Premiere | Episode 1 (TV-14) | How to Watch Dan Brown's "The Lost Symbol" OnlineMystery-solving symbologist Robert Langdon became a popular figure thanks to Dan Brown's novels "The Da Vinci Code" and "Angels and Demons". In the film adaptation, Tom Hanks embodied the character. In the "Lost Symbol" series, Robert travels back in time to when he was a young professor (played by Ashley Zukerman). The action begins when his mentor, Peter Solomon (Eddie Izzard), is kidnapped. With the help of Peter's daughter Catherine (Valerie Currie), Robert must solve a series of cryptic puzzles to rescue him.

Film | 1 hr 35 min (PG-13) | Watch Now The English-language remake of 2017's "Mon Garson" follows the same improvisational approach as the original. Lead actor James McAvoy receives no script and learns what is happening as the film progresses. He plays a man whose seven-year-old son goes missing at a campsite. He goes there and meets his frenzied ex-wife (Claire Foy) and the police. Their suspicions are that their son has been kidnapped and that it has something to do with the father's work. He is set on a hard road full of twists and turns and dangers in his search for his own child.

Series Premiere | Episodes 1-8 (TV-MA) | Watch Now This deep dish pizza adds to the ever-expanding genre of adult animation. The series is based on Chris Witaske's satirical Twitter account and follows the disorganized life of Diane (Lauren Ash), a scatterbrained hairdresser. Her husband has just moved out and the salon has been bought out by a hipster corporation headed by boss Gideon (RuPaul). On top of that, she gets a new roommate when her nerdy nephew Daniel (Rory O'Malley) spends his gap year in Chicago before going to Stanford University.

Special Edition | Airs Sunday, September 19 at 8 p.m. ET on Paramount Plus Despite Netflix's Emmy nominations, it has failed to win any of the top awards, drama and comedy. The latter has been won by Ted Russo and will not win again this year. However, Netflix is expected to take the Emmy crown thanks to The Crown. The royal drama should also clean up the acting categories, winning trophies for Josh O'Connor (Prince Charles), Emma Colin (Princess Diana), and Gillian Anderson (Margaret Thatcher). With the exception of Ted Russo, comedy honors are more up in the air. That's because either Kaley Cuoco ("Flight Attendant") or Jean Smart ("Hacks") will probably win Best Actress. And the late Michael K. Williams will finally win his first posthumous Emmy for "Lovecraft Country."
