tvOS 15 comes after the announcement of the new Apple TV 4K. tvOS 15 was not in the spotlight at WWDC 2021, but Apple did mention several new Apple TV features, including spatial audio with AirPods, and after the presentation, developers The company released a beta version of the product to developers after the presentation.

Apple's September product event also did not mention Apple TV software, but the company did divulge one key piece of information.

tvOS is the operating system that powers the Apple TV, and a new version is usually released each fall. Last year's tvOS 14 brought several new features to the Apple TV, including multi-user support and audio sharing, but no major changes.

Rumors circulated that tvOS 15 would introduce major design changes to navigation, but the expected announcement at WWDC 2021 did not materialize. Developer information about Apple's new tvOS indicates that there will be a redesigned playback interface, which we are eager to see.

Here is what we know so far about tvOS 15.

At WWDC 2021 in June, Apple released a developer beta, even though it was not a high-profile software update like iOS 15, watchOS 8, or macOS 12 Monterey. tvOS 15's public beta debuted and Soon, months passed without additional information.

That will change on Monday, September 20, when tvOS 15 becomes available alongside Apple's iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch updates.

While there was no tvOS 15 section at WWDC, Apple did reveal some of the new tvOS features coming this fall.

SharePlay: This feature allows participants in a FaceTime call to create a viewing party and sync with friends to watch a movie or show. Initiate a FaceTime call with a friend and create a watch party via a compatible streaming service (including Disney Plus and HBO Max). You can then AirPlay the show or movie on your Apple TV. Note that SharePlay will be delayed until an update later this year.

Spatial Audio: Experience theater-like surround sound on Apple TV 4K when paired with AirPods Pro or AirPods Max.

HomePod Mini integration: Now you can ask Siri to play movies and shows on your Apple TV from your HomePod Mini; HomePod mini can also connect to your Apple TV like a soundbar. You can also use the HomePod Mini to check security camera footage and control other smart home features from your Apple TV.

Apple TV App: Two new content features will be added to the Apple TV app: the first is "Shared With You," consisting of content recommended by friends and family. The second is "For All of You," which is lined with content intended for group viewing, such as a family movie night. Suggestions can also be curated based on who is watching.

Apple released the tvOS 15 beta to developers on June 7 after WWDC 2021. A public beta followed in July prior to the full release this month.

Apple's developer memo on "What's New in tvOS" lists two major updates: the first concerns FaceID. tvOS 15 uses Face ID or Touch ID from an iPhone or iPad to authenticate purchases and tvOS app Signing in to tvOS apps.

The second is a "redesigned playback interface." We expect to get more information on what this redesign will entail in the near future.

The navigation and playback interface of tvOS has not changed for a long time. Earlier this year, rumors circulated that tvOS 15 was a "major update" with a navigation redesign. Israeli blog The Verifier (which has a poor track record) reported that tvOS 15 will have a new design along with parental controls, kids mode, and Screen Time. claimed to be working on a live channel program guide.

So far, however, the only confirmed redesigns are an enigmatic new playback interface and two new content rows in the Apple TV app.

tvOS 15 is expected to be compatible with all devices running tv OS 14, including the Apple TV 4K (2021), the original Apple TV 4K (2017), and the Apple TV HD.
