With the unveiling of the iPhone 13 approaching, there are many rumors and leaks circulating about the device, ranging from a 120Hz display to a smaller display notch. But the tidbit that excited me the most about Apple's latest flagship phone is not a new addition, but instead the removal of a previous iPhone 12 option.

Ever since the iPhone 4S, my personal favorite iPhone, Apple has offered 64GB of storage on each flagship in its lineup; a decade ago, that was considered a healthy amount of storage to play with. Not so now.

Yet Apple has continued to offer base models of phones with just 64GB of storage. Basically, the entry-level iPhone 12 model was launched five years ago with a storage capacity that was not suitable for its intended use, let alone in 2020. But times may be changing.

Reliable Apple insider Ming-Chi Kuo recently scooped that Apple will discontinue the 64GB model in the iPhone 13 and instead offer 128GB in the base version. This will still fill up uncomfortably quickly for most users, but it is at least manageable if additional memory-saving steps are taken, such as clearing the cache regularly and optimizing photo storage.

Kuo also reports that Apple will offer up to 1TB of storage options on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. This, coupled with the elimination of the 64GB option, indicates that Apple is finally getting serious about the storage capabilities of its devices.

Almost certainly, there are more important additions to the iPhone 13 that will grab headlines and convince current iPhone 12 owners to upgrade. The only regret is that the price of the 1TB iPhone 13 Pro Max will probably put me over the edge financially.
