One UI update for Samsung Android12 is ready for testing

With Android 12 development in its final stages, it's time for Android phone makers to bring their own unique flavor to their phone software in preparation for the big update. And Samsung seems to be ahead of the process.

Samsung announced today (September 13) that it is launching a beta program for One UI 4, a new version of its user interface based on Android 12. Galaxy S21 users in select markets, including the U.S., can register for the beta program using the Samsung Members app on their phones. Registration will begin tomorrow (September 14).

The timing is probably no coincidence. Samsung will launch its One UI 4 beta program on the same day that Apple prepares to launch the iPhone 13, and at the same time it is preparing to release iOS 15. The new beta program is not going to overshadow Apple's big day, but it will give Samsung Galaxy S21 users their own software update to track.

Previous One UI beta programs have usually launched in October, so this is definitely an earlier than usual launch for Samsung. There is no word on whether the user interface will be ready earlier than usual, meaning that Android 12 will be available to Samsung device owners. Usually, Samsung's flagship devices will begin getting the new version of One Ui around the end of the year.

First introduced three years ago, the One UI is Samsung's take on Android. It features rounded icons and a streamlined interface intended to make it easier to use larger phones with one hand.

This version of One UI relies heavily on Android 12 for its functionality - or at least for the features Samsung is talking about at the moment. Samsung promises more theme options for adjusting the look of your device, along with tools for setting your phone's home screen, icons, notifications, and wallpaper. One UI 4 also focuses on widget upgrades for greater customization. And of course, expect many more emjois to be added with this update.

In addition, Samsung is touting new privacy features in One UI 4, such as indicator alerts when apps are using the phone's microphone or camera One UI 4 also extends the permission option to view history up to 7 days, not just 24 hours

Android 12 is currently in beta, but the fifth and final version is out. Highlights of this release include a new Material You design, improved quick settings, and the aforementioned widget enhancements.
