Google has promised to launch the Pixel 6 this fall, so the appearance of benchmarks on sites like Geekbench is not entirely surprising. Likewise, the Pixel 6 Pro listing found by Phone Arena is interesting for several reasons, even if it should be taken with a larger than usual pinch of salt.

While the centerpiece of the new phone will be Google's brand new Tensor chip, some reports suggest that it may actually be an unannounced Samsung chip. If so, the Geekbench listing is interesting, as it points to a SoC consisting of two Cortex X1 cores clocked at 2.8Ghz, two medium cores at 2.25Ghz, and four cores set at 1.8Ghz. Samsung and Qualcomm's flagship chips, on the other hand, have one main core, three middle cores, and four high-efficiency cores.

Still, the source of the leak, Digital Chat Station, seems to corroborate this list in a recent tweet, adding that it will feature a Mali-G78 GPU.

According to the listing, the device will run Android 12 and, not surprisingly given that it is made by Google, will have 12GB RAM. The actual raw performance numbers are somewhat underwhelming at this point, with a single-core score of 414 and a multi-core performance of 2,074.

This is considerably weaker than Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888, which tends to score around 1,000 and 3,500 in the same test, but it shouldn't be read too deeply at this point. Before the release of Geekbench, phones are often outperformed before they are fine-tuned for better performance. One example is the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE, which first appeared in May with underwhelming numbers, but has steadily improved with each subsequent appearance.

According to Google, the new Tensor chip will be a game changer, with a special focus on machine learning and AI, something the company describes as "transforming the experience of the camera, voice recognition, and other Pixel 6 features."

We should know very shortly how well these claims stand up to scrutiny, as reports generally suggest that the Pixel 6 will be announced next month.

Prominent leaker Jon Prosser predicts that the device will be announced on October 19 and available for purchase on October 28, and the fact that Google's own photo of the device released this week shows "Tuesday the 19th," makes this initial date even more plausible.

All eyes are on Google's October event, and perhaps the long-awaited Pixel Fold will also make an appearance.
