iPad mini6 rumors shut down the mini LED display ahead of Apple's event

Apple's redesigned iPad mini 6 may not get the mini LED display upgrade we were hoping for.

A post on Chinese social network Weibo claims to have information about the upcoming small Apple tablet, which is said to be unveiled on September 14, alongside the iPhone 13. The information in the post resurfaces rumors we have already heard about the upcoming iPad mini, but also claims that it will not feature a mini LED display like the iPad Pro 2021.

The current iPad mini has a perfect display, but a mini-LED panel would promise improved brightness, color, and contrast without the cost and burn-in risks associated with OLED displays. It would be a noteworthy upgrade, but at present it appears that it may be off the cards.

The source of the leak, Bored Panda, also provided other details about the iPad mini 6, and it appears that many features will be borrowed from the fourth-generation iPad Air 2020.

The renderings we have seen so far seem to indicate that the chunky top and bottom bezels are gone, and the home button with Touch ID has been removed. Instead of a home button, Apple's next compact tablet may feature a Touch ID sensor on the side button; USB-C connectivity, a single rear-facing camera, and second-generation Apple Pencil support are all notable iPad mini 6 features.

Unofficial renderings have also been found that suggest the iPad mini 6 will look like a compressed iPad Air 4, with both design and color options similar.

Bored Panda also suggested an 8.4-inch display, symmetrical speakers, and a 60 Hz refresh rate.

However, the iPad mini 6 is not the only tablet that could be released this fall. Reliable Apple informant Mark Gurman had previously claimed that the next event in Cupertino could include the announcement of the iPad 9, the successor to Apple's fifth-generation entry-level tablet. Unlike the iPad mini 6, the iPad 9 will not undergo a major redesign, though it could still bring more things to the table, including more storage, upgraded RAM, a slightly larger display, and a more powerful processor.

In addition to the rumored tablet, Apple's September event could see not one, but a total of five products announced, including the iPhone 13 lineup, Apple Watch Series 7, and AirPods 3.

Even if there is no tablet announcement next week, there is still a good chance that it will be announced sometime this fall, as we have heard that Apple may be preparing further events through this December. iPad Air 4 and iPad 8 in 2020 will be announced separately from the iPhone 12 announced separately from the lineup.
