The iPhone 13 announcement is just days away, and once the iPhone 13 arrives, it will no doubt be joined by new iPhone 13 accessories. And we may have just caught a glimpse of one of these peripherals.

What appears to be a new version of the Apple MagSafe charger was spotted in the FCC database (seen by Dave Zatz and 9to5Mac). Finding this product in the database as the last stop on the device's journey before it hits store shelves is an exciting sign of an upcoming Apple announcement.

MagSafe is a magnetic charging system that debuted with the iPhone 12 series and includes a basic charging pack that provides up to 15 watts of power. There is also a MagSafe Duo iPhone/Apple Watch charger and a portable MagSafe Battery Pack. In addition, several third-party MagSafe devices are available.

The version number of the original MagSafe charger is A2140. The newer one found in the database is A2548, which was submitted for evaluation on August 13 of this year. The image attached to the application shows the FCC approval label printed on the USB-C end of the charger's cable and the same circular design as before.

The testing itself was completed on four "Legacy Phone" models, which feature codes that refer to the four iPhone 12 series models. There are also four "new phone" models, presumably the iPhone 13 series, with all eight of these devices fitted with a silicone case (presumably to ensure that the charger will work through it) and two different power adapters. The FCC is also testing with an interesting pair of AirPods as well, as the AirPods 3 could appear at the same time as the iPhone 13.

Disturbingly, the data does not seem to indicate that anything has changed with this version of MagSafe. Charging speeds are the same as before, 15W for iPhones and 1W for AirPods. It is possible that Apple has improved the design in ways that the FCC's testing need not take into account, but it is unfortunate that Apple appears to be sticking with the relatively slow wireless charging speeds.

9to5Mac references an earlier July report saying the iPhone 13's MagSafe charger may feature a stronger magnet, but that doesn't seem like a major upgrade.

Based on previous years' announcements, the iPhone 13 could be revealed next week and the Apple event will probably be announced today. Rumored upgrades include a 120Hz display on the Pro model, a new camera lens, computed photography upgrades like portrait mode video, a larger battery in all four models, a new more powerful A15 Bionic chip set, and a smaller display notch.
