The concept of this iPhone flip is foldable that Apple wants you to make

Apple is rumored to be working on the iPhone Flip. However, other than a few leaks, we have not received much in the way of leaked design information that would give us a strong idea of what this phone might look like.

However, a clamshell flip phone has been hinted at, and that was enough for YouTube channel ConceptsiPhone to cook up a rendering of what the iPhone Flip could potentially look like. And we are rather taken by this design. Especially because it has features we'd like to see in the iPhone 13.

Currently, Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 3 is the darling of the foldable clamshell smartphone. And that means there is plenty of room for rival models to enter the foldable space.

ConceptsiPhone's renderings present an attractive design that could compete with Samsung if and when Apple decides to enter the foldable phone market.

The rendered image looks like a standard iPhone 12 that folds in half vertically. That may not look like cutting-edge innovation. But who would not look favorably on the iPhone 12's smooth flat edges?

But there is more to this rendering than just a folded display. Most notable is the concept of Touch ID, which was rumored to be included in the iPhone 13, under the display.

This is one feature I would love to see on future iPhones, foldable or not. It would be ideal to have an alternative biometric security option at a time when the wearing of masks is becoming more popular and causing problems with Face ID. According to one rumor, Apple is testing Face ID that works with a mask, but it is not known if it will be ready for the iPhone 13.

Another notable aspect of the iPhone Flip renderings is the reduced display notch. This is something we are eagerly awaiting to see debut on the iPhone 13; since the iPhone X, the display notch has remained the same size.

Also, while the notch has a powerful sensor, the notch is getting quite old now that more and more phones are starting to have front-facing cameras under the display.

Other key features this render assumes the iPhone Flip will have include a "120Hz ProMotion Liquid Retina XDR display."

And ConceptsiPhone's video casually suggests that the iPhone Flip may feature the Apple M1 chip.

In short, adding a larger foldable display, a smaller notch, and new Touch ID to the iPhone 12 is enough to pique our curiosity. There is a caveat, however.

According to previous rumors, Apple does not plan to make a foldable phone until 2023. This was further corroborated by the DSCC. So while this imagined version of the iPhone Flip looks good for 2021 or 2022 standards, we expect Apple to have a fresher iPhone design in two years, as well as an iPhone without a notch.

With that in mind, if the iPhone Flip does indeed appear in two years, we would expect it to look quite different from this rendering. Time will tell.
