Tesla Roadster just delayed 2023 - and this is the culprit

For Tesla fans who paid between $50,000 and $250,000 in deposits for the next Tesla Roadster, it's not a little depressing that the all-electric sports car has been pushed back to 2023.

The news comes from a tweet from Tesla founder Elon Musk himself, who explained that the Tesla Roadster is unlikely to hit the streets this year due to supply chain shortages. The car was initially announced in 2017 with a 2020 launch date. Tesla has since delayed the launch to 2021, 2022, and now 2023.

Elon Musk added that it does not matter how many products Tesla announces, the current supply and chip shortage means none can be shipped.

Tesla has even gone so far as to rewrite software for different computer chips to allow more vehicles to come off the assembly line to avoid supply chain shortages. This has allowed Tesla to keep producing cars while other manufacturers have had to close their factories and wait for supplies from overseas. Of course, Tesla produces far fewer cars than Ford or Honda.

Companies that did not have this foresight are now feeling the heat. For example, GM announced on September 2 that it would close nearly all of its plants in the U.S. due to a chip shortage. The automaker announced that it would take longer to repair and ship unfinished vehicles; according to The Verge, affected vehicles include:

Chevrolet

GMC

Buick

Cadillac

As for Tesla, When the Roadster was first announced, the company gave prospective buyers two pre-order options. Tesla claims the car's 0-60 acceleration is 1.9 seconds. The Roadster will also be powered by a 200 kWh battery pack, giving the Roadster a range of 620 miles.

Unfortunately, Tesla sports car fans are not the only ones affected; in August, the company announced that the Tesla Cybertruck has been pushed back to 2022.
