Google accidentally prevented some Android users from making calls — How to Fix It

If you're in the minority who still use your smartphone for calling, Google may have accidentally screwed that up.

Bleeping Computer reports that a bug within the Google app is preventing some Android phone users from making and receiving calls. The fact that Google caused such a major problem with the phone feature in its eponymous app would probably make you blush in Mountain View, but fortunately, there is already an update if you encounter this problem.

"After the latest update to the Google Search app on Android, users of certain phones are having difficulty receiving and making phone calls," a Google community manager announced, Beeping Computer reported.

You may not be aware that this app is installed on your Android phone, but it is usually one of the Android apps pre-installed on the device. The app allows users to search the web, check news feeds, and use Google Assistant in one convenient location, but it duplicates other dedicated apps offered by the company.

Google has not confirmed which phones are affected by this issue, but according to complaints found by Bleeping Computer, the problem appears to primarily affect LG smartphone owners, including users of the LG G7 ThinQ, LG V40 ThinQ, and LG Q70.

If you are facing this issue, you will need to update your Google app. This may be done automatically, but if you want to deal with it yourself, check out our guide on how to update your Android apps.

However, some users have had to uninstall the Google app to fix the problem. Keep that in mind if the "phone" part of your smartphone is still not working.
