Spencer's release date and everything we know so far

Those of you who have been eagerly awaiting details about Princess Diana's new biopic, "Spencer," are in luck. It has been quite difficult to get information and sneak peeks, but now that the release date is approaching, the studio producing the film has generously decided to provide even more information for us to get excited about.

The People's Princess will always be in the hearts of people around the world, and there is no doubt that Spencer will show us a different side of Diana and the inner workings that made her such a complex and interesting person.

Here is what we currently know about Spencer.

It's hard to believe that Spencer was first announced over a year ago, but after what feels like an endless wait, the release date is finally upon us. Spencer's world premiere will take place at the Venice International Film Festival on September 3. Most audiences, however, will have to wait until its theatrical release, scheduled for November 5, almost two months later.

Neon, Spencer's production studio, finally released a first-look trailer for the film on August 26. Although the trailer is only a little over a minute long, it gives viewers a glimpse into the lives of Sandringham and Diana back in the day. It introduces overhead footage of the luxurious life she lived and an intimate short film before a glimpse of Stewart's brooding portrayal of Princess Diana.

When asked, "Do they know everything?", Diana replies, "No, they don't. Diana replies, "They don't know." It is enough to whet one's appetite for the full film when it is released. Thankfully, the wait is not that long.

Still a little ways off, the studio recently released a teaser poster for Spencer to get fans excited. The poster shows Stewart/Diana hiding her face to reveal a few details about one of the dresses in the film and is captioned, "All fairy tales end." Kristen Stewart is Diana Spencer. Kristen Stewart is Diana Spencer.

No doubt we will get more sneak peeks as the movie gets closer to release.

With the release of the film only a few months away, it makes sense that production on "Spencer" is almost complete. We know that major filming took place around February, as Stewart was photographed in costume at the Schlosshotel Kronberg in Germany.

According to Harper's Bazaar, Spencer also recently finished production in the UK.

Spencer definitely gave Stewart a role where preparation was key, but she was excited about the challenge. She told InStyle in November 2020 about playing Diana: "By the way, I haven't been this excited about a role in a long time."

However, there were challenges involved, especially when it came to perfecting Diana's voice. 'People know that voice, and it's so unique and special. We're working on it now, and we already have a dialect coach," she said before the shoot.

Princess Diana is a legendary figure, which makes casting difficult. However, the right person for the job is Kristen Stewart, who plays the nation's princess alongside Jack Farthing as Prince Charles.

In addition, Thomas Douglas will play Diana's father, Earl John Spencer, and Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, will be played by newcomer Olga Helsing. Timothy Spall, Sally Hawkins, and Sean Harris will also appear in Spencer, but their specific roles have not yet been announced, so it is unclear what their positions will be.

Given all that has happened in Princess Diana's life, it would be difficult to make an all-encompassing biopic. That is why it is such a relief that Spencer focuses on one Christmas vacation in the 1990s that the Princess spent in her beloved country retreat of Sandringham. This particular vacation is notable because it is believed to be when Diana decided she wanted to end her marriage to Prince Charles.

The details of "Spencer's" timeline are a bit blurry, but that's not the point. Instead, director Pablo LarraĆn wants to focus on Diana's state of mind at the time and the major events that changed everything. 'They were there for years,' director Lalayne told Deadline. 'They spent Christmas there for years, and that's where the movie takes place in the early '90s, circa 1992. Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day: ...... understand what she wants and what she's trying to do."

Spencer will also highlight Diana's close relationship with her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, and how much she loved them." The key, Laraine explains, "is that she discovers over the course of the film that what she really needs to do is become who she wants to be. And that means she doesn't have to be next to anyone or be a part of anything, just herself and her children," Laraine explained. Princess Diana was many things, but the bottom line is that she was a great mother."

Laraine made it clear that screenwriter Spencer (Steven Knight, creator of "Peaky Blinders") was not interested in Diana's later life or the accident that took her life. 'She died a few years after our story was set, so we don't deal with that,' he said. 'Her life lasted only three days, and in that small amount of time we can paint a broader, larger picture of who she was. We all know her fate... We don't have to go there."
