The Apple Watch 7 is already rumored to be undergoing a fairly major redesign, possibly adding two new larger sizes, which is literally a big deal as the Apple Watch could become more independent from the iPhone.

According to a leaker named UnclePan on the Chinese social platform Weibo (via MacRumors), the Apple Watch 7 may come in larger 41mm and 45mm case sizes. This would replace the 40mm and 44mm of the Apple Watch Series 6.

By comparison, the standard Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 has 40mm and 44mm models, so both Apple Watch 7 options would be larger than the baseline versions of Samsung's latest smartwatch. The classic models come in 42mm and 46mm versions, so Samsung will offer a larger smartwatch than Apple.

The good news is that Leaker claims that the Apple Watch bands best suited for the 40mm and 44mm Apple Watches will continue to work on the new 41mm and 45mm Apple Watch 7 models. Therefore, those upgrading to the new Apple Watch will hopefully be able to continue using their current bands.

An earlier Apple Watch 7 leak by Front Page Tech's Jon Prosser pointed to this possibility. At the time, he stated that "the display will remain the same as the past few generations, but at least from what I've heard, they are testing a prototype with even smaller bezels and more screen."

There are many possible benefits to a larger Apple Watch, including the ability to use the Apple Watch 7 by itself more often without the need for an iPhone. A larger panel would make everything from sending messages to checking photos easier. In addition, the already announced watchOS 8 will add support for digital keys, which will allow users to enter cars, hotel rooms, and other places with a virtual wallet using their wrist.

Prosser also said that Apple is "working on experimental colors" as part of a redesign that should include flatter edges, similar to the iPhone 12 and iPad Pro design language.

More recently, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported on a possible Apple Watch 7 upgrade. He mentioned a flatter design in addition to slimmer bezels, an updated processor, and a new Time to Run mode. He reported that Apple is testing a new lamination technology that brings the display closer to the top cover.

Other potential upgrades to the Apple Watch 7 include a new swim tracking feature and a larger battery.

The Apple Watch 7 may be slightly thicker than its predecessor, but many shoppers will be willing to make that trade-off for a larger display.
