Why can't you find this popular appliance in the U.S.?

Whenever I visit the United States, I like to browse through the electronics section of Wal-Mart and Best Buy. The US is always quick to embrace the latest product innovations and hybrid designs. There also tends to be far more brands and choices than are on display in UK stores.

That's why I was shocked when I suddenly noticed that an important appliance was missing from the shelves. An American might not even know it exists, but a Brit might be surprised.

A steam generator iron is basically a steam iron with a larger, separate water tank. Compared to a conventional iron, it produces more than twice as much steam at a higher pressure, making it ideal for removing creases and wrinkles. Different settings are available for different materials, and the steam is controlled by a trigger.

Steam generator irons also have steam shot settings, but they rarely spray water like a typical steam iron. These are popular appliances for households with large piles of laundry that they want to get rid of quickly.

Compared to the UK, the ironing market in the US appears to be smaller. In fact, since the advent of easy-care and non-ironing materials, ironing has generally become less common. Due in part to the pandemic, few people need to dress up for an event or care that much about their image.

However, most homes will still have steam irons tucked away, and they are bound to come into play as we return to the office and start going out again. Once they learn of its existence and benefits, I suspect that a significant number of consumers will be interested in upgrading to this appliance.

You won't find steam generator irons in most department stores in the US. Amazon has several options, but there are only two to choose from: the Rowenta VR83421U1 and the Laurastar Lift Plus steam iron. Hopefully in the future steam irons will finally make their way to the U.S. and show their potential.
