Brooklyn Nine - Nine season8 is not in Peacock - why am I paying for it?

Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Inspector Holt is less than impressed, but this tidbit may top his long list of dislikes: the final season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine is not available on Peacock.

I had assumed that Peacock Premium would be the online option for Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 8, along with Hulu. However, the first two episodes that aired on NBC on Thursday did not show up on Peacock, an NBCUniversal subsidiary. They did, however, show up on Hulu.

Then other confused fans started seeing some chatter on Twitter, trying (and failing) to find new episodes of B99 on Peacock.

Tom's Guide received confirmation that new episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 8 were not available on Peacock.

As a result, like Twitter user Sarah, I too wondered, "Then why am I paying for Peacock Premium?" I wonder: for $4.99/month, Peacock Premium gives you access to original programming and "next-day access to the latest season of an NBC-broadcast series" (from the official press release).

Of course, this is not the case for some of NBC's most popular shows. For example, new episodes of "This Is Us" are not available on Peacock the next day, but eight days after airing. However, "This Is Us" was produced by 20th Century Fox and is now owned by Disney. The streaming rights were sold to Disney-controlled Hulu long ago, and Disney probably did not want to share them with a new competitor.

Still, "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" is produced by NBCUniversal, and it makes sense that the new season would be streamed on Peacock. But has streaming ever made much sense?

This kind of head-scratching streaming conundrum is nothing new. Previous examples include the tug-of-war between Peacock and WarnerMedia's HBO Max over the Harry Potter and "Wild Speed" movies and divorced parents.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine may not be NBC's biggest show, but it boasts a very loyal following. And Season 8 will be its final episode! This fiasco came on the heels of Peacock's lackluster Olympic coverage, which was confusing and filled with boring studio segments (except for Snoop Dogg's impressive equestrian commentary) with no particular additions.

Despite the Olympic debacle, I am actually a fan of Peacock as a streaming service. Its library includes several of my favorite series, including Friday Night Lights, Battlestar Galactica, Downton Abbey, the reboot of Saved By the Bell, We are Lady Parts, Girls5 eva" (which I convinced my colleague Philip Michaels to pay a premium for) are definitely worth checking out.

That's why this "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" situation is so unfortunate. The fact is, there are plenty of streaming services competing for our monthly dollars; what good is an NBC hit show if it's not on NBC's streaming service?
