Heinicke filled in for the injured Alex Smith in the playoffs and finished the 2020 season with an impressive performance. He had 306 yards, one touchdown, and one interception against the Super Bowl champion Buccaneers in the Wild Card round. He also ran for 46 yards and one touchdown. In the offseason, Washington rewarded Heinicke's efforts with a two-year contract extension ($8.75 million).

Despite Heinicke's new contract, Washington still wanted certainty at quarterback. So the football team signed Ryan Fitzpatrick, as many football teams have done when they want a veteran who can at least take over. Washington marks the 38-year-old's ninth team heading into his 17th NFL season.

Washington enters Thursday night as a two-point road favorite. The over/under is 36.
