What if...? Replace Chris Evans for its first episode

What if...? What if Steve Rogers isn't Chris Evans? No, that's not the story at the center of the first episode of the Disney Plus series (spoiler alert for the other casting in that episode, by the way).

Our sister sites, TotalFilm and GamesRadar, have just published an article by Marvel's What If...? director Brian Andrews told us that What If...? was unable to attract everyone on the animated show's cast wish list.

"There was some freedom," Andrews noted.

"It's really hard to get everybody because of the crazy schedule.

Andrews went on to discuss the work that voice actor Josh Keaton (who has voiced a number of roles in the recent Spider-Man animated series and voiced Scott Lang/Ant-Man in the recent Ant-Man animated series) did in Evans' place.

Andrews explained a bit about the process, after noting that the understudy actors "came in to take over and did a great job."

He said that the actors needed to "bring a little something to themselves. It's not just an impression. It's not just about impressions. They have to actually act out the moment and convey some of the emotional intent."

And before we go any further, remember: spoiler alert!

With this piece, with this character, you feel the connection that Keaton's Cap has with Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter. And, oddly enough, Chris Evans not voicing Steve Rogers is not necessarily confusing.

"If..." is a constant concern throughout Episode 1 of the Episode 1, I am constantly reminded of how this is not the "correct" timeline. Is that why Rogers sounds different? It almost pales in comparison to other events that occur in the series.

Nevertheless, "What If...?" was fortunate to feature familiar voices, including Atwell, Samuel J. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, and Stanley Tucci.

What If...? Episode 1 also has an ending that works, with Carter passing through a gateway to another dimension. Those of us who have been eyeing "Loki" with a tiger's eye know the moment when Carter appeared on TVA. That moment when Carter transcends dimensions raised my eyebrows at what was about to happen in the MCU.
