Tcl Google Tv Hands-on: The Affordable Smart home TV You've Been Waiting For

TCL today announced new versions of its 5 and 6 series TVs.

TCL has produced Android TV before, but its smart TV software will be discontinued for the new Google TV. compared to Roku TV, Google TV supports more smart home controls and offers integration with other Google services. It offers integration; TCL's Google TV has a built-in long-distance microphone and acts like Google Home's best speaker when you say "Hey Google."

Google TV is the next iteration of Google's smart TV operating system. It is an evolution of Android TV, a platform used in the past by the likes of Hisense, Sony, and TCL. But as we saw this year with the Sony Bravia XR A80J OLED and Chromecast with Google TV streaming device, Google TV feels completely fresh.

The software focuses on content rather than apps, and the enhanced user interface, organized by recommended and trending content, enhances the overall Android TV experience. In addition, by prioritizing YouTube TV, Google's own pay-per-view live TV service, Google TV offers a holistic solution to modern TV viewing.

So what do we get with TCL's Google TV? I had the opportunity to see the 5 and 6 series Google TVs in action and was impressed. From my paired phone, I was able to easily add "White Lotus," one of the best HBO Max shows available today, to my watch list. I also noticed that the 2016 version of "Suicide Squad" was trending. The remake of "Suicide Squad" has finally been released, and it's one that many people (including me) might want to see.

Also in the realm of content curation, TCL's new product is the first Google TV to support child-specific profiles. Parents can add selected channels and set timers to manage their children's viewing habits.

Until now, Android TV has only been available on lower-end TCL models: the 5 series (50", 55", 65", 75") and the 6 series (55", 65", 75").

As for picture and sound quality, you can expect the same QLED experience as the existing Roku versions of these sets, including the TCL 6-Series Roku TV (R635), currently one of the best TVs at this price. They will also have access to favorite gaming settings such as variable refresh rate and auto game mode, which are ideal for next-generation gaming consoles.

A key physical difference between TCL Roku TV and TCL Google TV is the far-field microphone. There is a big emphasis here on the TV being a smart home device as well as being at home, and TCL offers an add-on webcam with these Google TV sets that allows video conferencing from the comfort of your couch.

All of TCL's Google TVs are currently available for pre-order; TCL has not revealed an exact release date for the new lineup, but with pre-orders now open, it is expected to begin shipping within a few weeks.
