Android users who were jealous of the iPhone 12's MagSafe wireless charging and mounting system now have a new option: Realme has unveiled its own system, MagDart, which improves on Apple's original in several ways.

It's a slim 15W charger that looks much like a MagSafe disc, and a chunky but much faster 50W wireless charging system. realme also announced at a dedicated launch event a power bank and charging stand combination, magnetic case, kickstand with magnetic wallet, and a pop-up beauty light accessory for selfies, among other compatible accessories.

The catch? It is not yet known which devices will work natively with MagDart. The phone shown at the event and in promotional materials is called the Realme Flash, but it is purely a concept device; the Realme GT is also on display, but it can only use MagDart when placed in a compatible case, which has a USB-C pass-through to and can supply power to cell phones.

Realme offers mid-range and budget devices, like the Realme 8 5G, that use the 65W fast charging system needed to run MagDart at its fastest. when the Realme 9 series and the upcoming X and C series are introduced within the next 12 months it seems likely that they will support MagDart in some form. [Compared to MagSafe, MagDart is superior; MagDart offers much faster charging speeds than MagSafe, plus a wider variety of accessories right out of the box. Apple, after all, has just unveiled its own MagSafe-compatible power bank. But Apple made the smart decision to release it along with a variety of MagSafe-enabled phones, rather than retrofitting a concept device or existing phone like Realme. And Apple is also working with a wide range of accessory manufacturers to create third-party MagSafe devices.

But the thing is, Apple likely doesn't care about MagDart. Apple has a habit of defining smartphone design trends, and this is just one new one to add to a long list. Moreover, the more companies introduce magnetic wireless charging, the more third-party accessories will be available to enrich the experience, including for iPhone users.
