YouTube Premium Lite Debuts at a cheaper price — here's what you get

For those who have been hesitant to pay for an ad-free YouTube experience, this new tier might just blow your mind.

YouTube Premium has introduced a less expensive subscription service that does not show ads; this service, called YouTube Premium Lite, not only removes ads, but also includes YouTube Music, offline downloads, background playback are also not included. The service is currently being tested in Europe and is limited to Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden.

However, if the response to YouTube Premium Lite is positive, it may be expanded beyond these regions.

As discovered by The Verge, Premium Lite will be offered for €6.99 per month, €5 less than the standard Premium membership at €11.99. YouTube Kids is also included in Premium Lite.

"In Scandinavia and Benelux (excluding Iceland), we are testing a new service to offer users even more choices: Premium Lite costs €6.99 per month (or local monthly equivalent) and includes ad-free videos from YouTube." A YouTube spokesperson said in a statement to The Verge.

It is unclear if a similar test will take place in the U.S. Tom's Guide has contacted YouTube about this and will update this article as soon as we hear back.

Unfortunately, for hardcore YouTube users who do not care for YouTube Music or have Spotify Premium separately, Premium Lite does not have a background playback feature. This feature allows users to continue listening to videos on YouTube while performing other tasks on their Apple or Android devices.

Ultimately, this €6.99 tier does not feel completely premium simply by removing ads; YouTube says it is still in the testing phase of Premium Lite and will consider rolling out more plans depending on the results of this trial.
