How to place Solar lights optimally

Choosing the best solar lights is one thing, but finding the perfect spot for your backyard is quite another task. To do so requires a combination of taste and practicality.

Several factors can limit your choices, including function, aesthetics, and environment. We've put together a handy guide to help you decide where to install solar lights.

Ideally, the more sunlight the solar panels receive, the better, but that doesn't mean solar lights can't function in partially shaded areas.

Think about where in your yard you get the best sunlight and try to recharge your panels there before installing them permanently. Also note trees and fences that shade the panels for a significant portion of the day.

It is also a good idea to make sure that leaves and vegetation do not block the solar panels. Without effective charging, the lights will not be as bright.

Keep the panels away from other light sources, such as windows, so they will not be mistaken for daylight and switched off at night.

Installation location also depends on the type of solar light you choose. If you purchased a solar light with practicality in mind, such as illuminating a walkway or spotlighting a patio, you will have a specific result you want to achieve and can approximate where to install it.

If you want to add aesthetic value to your garden with solar lights, you can be more flexible in placement.

If stakes are to be placed along paths, they should be balanced so that they are not too dense and provide enough light to effectively illuminate the paths. Too many solar lights will look cluttered in daylight.

The best practice is to charge the solar lights and test some in small areas before planting them throughout the path. That way, you don't have to drill extra holes in the lawn! Also, install them in an easy-to-see location so they won't cause stumbling.

If there are steps or uneven areas along the path, place the lights near them so you and your guests don't trip over any hazards.

For string lights, decide where you want to hang them, such as around trees, flower beds, or patios. When in doubt, think about where you spend the most time or where you plan to entertain guests.

First, you should consider the length of cable you have and how far it will realistically extend in your desired area. Many of us are guilty of running out of lights in the middle of hanging them! It is helpful to have the lights on while you are hanging them so you can check your impressions, unless the package advises otherwise.

If string lights are to be hung for long distances, it is wise to connect them to a guide wire so as not to strain the cord.

When hanging fairy lights, make sure they are evenly distributed where you want to hang them and have someone at a distance to guide you.

When installing wall lights, be sure you are satisfied with the illumination intensity and position before installing them, such as in a high or elevated position that illuminates the entire yard.

If you install them high, they should cover the desired area, but they should be within reach, as you will need to go up again if you need to make adjustments or change bulbs.

As with wall lights, before installing step lights, charge them and make sure they have sufficient light at the height where they will be installed. An inch or two difference in height can make all the difference, and it is important that the steps are illuminated effectively. Also, don't let them stick out too far and become a tripping hazard.
