Motorola's new Edge 20 series of premium phones has debuted in Europe. The series is scheduled to launch in the UK in August of this year, and one or at least one version of one of these higher-specification handsets will be available in the US later this year.

The series consists of three models, ranging from the upper mid-range Edge 20 Lite to the entry-level flagship Edge 20 Pro. All share common features such as a 108MP main camera, 6.7-inch OLED display, and 5G connectivity, but there are reasons to purchase the basic Lite model as well as the top model, even if you have to add 350 pounds ($489).

All models will be available in the UK on August 19, with a U.S. release date yet to be determined. It is also not known which of the three models will be launched in the US market or if they will be improved versions. Motorola's European and U.S. product portfolios have little crossover, so it is possible that a version tailored to U.S. preferences will be introduced rather than one of the currently known models.

The Edge 20 Lite, the cheapest model in the series, is priced at £299 (about $417), about the same as the OnePlus Nord N10 and cheaper than the Google Pixel 4a. The vanilla Edge 20 costs 429 pounds ($599), comparable to the price of the OnePlus Nord 2 and Google Pixel 4a 5G. Finally, the Edge 20 Pro, at £649 ($906), was in the range of the base OnePlus 9 due to a significant price increase, but below the iPhone 12 and Samsung Galaxy S21.

With one or two unique color options per model and only a different number of rear-facing cameras, the Edge 20s all look very similar. Motorola uses a slim, boxy design, with a punch hole in the center of the display for the front camera.

Motorola added the customary Google Assistant key alongside the volume and power buttons on the side of the Edge 20. There is also a fingerprint sensor hidden in the power button on all models. While this may not be as impressive as the sensor under the display, it remains a practical and quick way to unlock the phone.

All three models have the same 6.7-inch FHD OLED panel screen. The only difference is the refresh rate: the Edge 20 Lite has a maximum of 90 Hz, while the Edge 20 and Edge 20 Pro have a maximum of 144 Hz. This is higher than the typical 120Hz of Android flagship smartphones and comparable to the refresh rates of smartphones like the Asus ROG Phone 5 and ZTE Axon 30 Ultra.

The most basic camera setup in the series can be seen on the Edge 20 Lite, with a 108MP main sensor, an 8MP ultrawide sensor that can also be a macro camera, and a depth sensor to enhance portrait mode and other special effects shots It consists of.

The Edge 20 also uses a 108MP primary camera, but has a higher-resolution 16MP ultrawide/macro camera and an 8MP 3x optical zoom telephoto camera; the Edge 20 Pro replaces this telephoto camera with an 8MP periscope module with 5x optical zoom. replacement, but uses the same 108MP/16MP sensor for the main and ultrawide.

All models use the same 32MP camera on the front. This can be used as part of one of the Edge 20's new camera features, "Dual Capture" mode, which allows simultaneous recording and photos from the front and rear cameras. Other software features include a Spot Color mode for adding color to black-and-white photos and a Pro mode that allows images to be saved as RAW files for greater control and more detailed editing of the captured image.

While none of the Edge 20 models are high-performing, they have a good amount of processing power there, given the specs. More importantly, all models are 5G compatible. However, only in the sub-6 GHz band, not the faster mmWave version used by some U.S. carriers.

The Edge 20 Lite has a Dimensity 720, a low-power chip as expected for a phone of this price, 6GB RAM, and 128GB storage. The Edge 20 has a Snapdragon 778G chip, 6GB or 8GB RAM, and 128GB storage; the Edge 20 Pro has a Snapdragon 870, 8GB RAM, and 128GB storage.

All three models differ slightly in battery capacity: the Edge 20 Lite has the smallest battery at 4,000mAh; the Edge 20 has the largest at 5,000mAh; the Edge 20 Pro is in the middle at 4,500mAh.

All three models use the same 30W wired fast charger, with no wireless charging option. The charger is also bundled with the phones, which is becoming increasingly rare now that both Apple and Samsung no longer bundle chargers with their major phone models.

Motorola has included Android 11 in its Edge 20 series, promising two full OS upgrades and two years of security updates. This is comparable to the two full years of updates offered by Samsung, but falls short of OnePlus' three years and the five-plus year gold standard Apple has established with iOS. [This gives access to full versions of streaming apps, mobile games, video chat apps, and a full-fledged desktop mode.

All Edge 20 models can use the new ReadyFor PC mode that allows users to create a small phone desktop on their Windows 10 device. This allows users to transfer data between devices more conveniently than using cloud storage or a file browser while still using all the full-featured Windows 10 apps. [Edge 20 and Edge 20 Pro offer this plus ReadyFor Wireless, which pairs the display with a cell phone via QR code, without the use of cables. ReadyFor allows the cell phone to act as a trackpad for the ReadyFor Wireless allows the user to control the display from their cell phone by using the cell phone as a trackpad.

Our full judgment on these new phones is reserved until we have them in hand for a full review and testing session. However, from what has been announced, Motorola has an opportunity to open up three different areas of the smartphone market all at once.

The generous camera, battery, charging, and display specs are where the Edge 20 series stands out from the competition. These could be excellent smartphones for users interested in getting the best photos, viewing experience, or daily life from their phones.
