The OnePlus 9T has reportedly been canceled, according to leaker Max Jambor. In a two-word tweet, he spelled doom for OnePlus' flagship device, which was slated to launch in late 2021; we contacted OnePlus, but the company declined to comment.

Not getting the 9T may sadden some OnePlus fans, but it's probably not that bad. There is no reason why the excellent OnePlus 9 needs a T successor this year. And it would prevent OnePlus from adding to its cluttered phone portfolio - something we've discussed several times.

In 2016, OnePlus introduced the OnePlus 3T, a slight upgrade from the 3 released earlier that year. Then came the 5T, which introduced an 18:9 aspect ratio to OnePlus phones (and was an excellent device in its own right.) The 6T featured OnePlus' first in-display fingerprint sensor and a teardrop notch in place of the iPhone X-like notch

However, the 6T was not the first OnePlus phone to feature a fingerprint sensor.

However, there was not much innovation when the OnePlus 7T and 7T Pro arrived; the 8T was similar, with few visible improvements from the OnePlus 8, which arrived in early 2020; the T series lost momentum, and the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 9T are unlikely to add much, given the excellence of both the Pro.

It is not so surprising that OnePlus declined to comment on Jambor's tweet. We still have a few months before we see the OnePlus 9T. Plans could change in the meantime, or OnePlus could reveal the issue later.

The two flagship phones in one year got old quickly - people were furious at Sony for doing the same thing, but OnePlus somehow got a pass from some fans.The T series brought a sense of FOMO, like buying an early-year model would be a loss. Perhaps OnePlus saw that the 9T could eat into sales of the 9 and 9 Pro and canceled the phones for that reason.

Whatever the possible reason, we don't know anything now, and if you are holding off on buying a OnePlus 9 or OnePlus 9 Pro in case the 9T comes out, we suggest you consider buying an existing 9 phone instead. These are very good and will remain excellent phones whether the 9T comes out or not. You can't really win by playing the perpetual waiting game.
