Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip 3 specifications reportedly leaked - and obvious image

The first proper images and some key specs of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 may have leaked ahead of their reveal at the Galaxy Unpacked event in two weeks.

Longtime leaker Evan Blass posted what looks like official images of the two foldable phones and listed a set of specs that both models are said to have. And from the images, it appears that waterproofing could be a key feature.

As for the Galaxy Z Flip 3, there are no real surprises; Blass claims that the phone will have a 6.7-inch internal foldable display along with a 1.9-inch cover display. And he also notes that the Z Flip 3 will feature dual 12MP main camera lenses and a 10MP selfie camera.

None of these specs, if accurate, are particularly innovative. The cover display is said to be larger than the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip's 1.1-inch panel, but otherwise the specs are the same as the previous model.

As for the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Blass claims that the flagship foldable phone will feature a 7.6-inch inner display and a 6.2-inch outer display. As for photography, it appears that the phone may feature three 12MP cameras on the back, a 10MP selfie camera on the outer cover screen, and a 4MP "main" selfie camera.

These specs are nearly identical to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, except for the 4MP selfie camera; the Fold 2 has a 10MP sensor on the main display, so dropping to 4MP would seem like a downgrade. However, it may suggest that this camera is actually a selfie camera under the display.

The possibility of Samsung using an under-display camera in future phones has been rumored for some time, and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 may be the first to feature that innovative hardware.

An under-display camera for the Fold 3's main display makes sense for a phone that prioritizes display space and is already set to feature a "cover" selfie camera. This is because the use of a low-resolution lens could be a compromise to place the camera below the display.

Even so, the ZTE Axon 20 5G has a 32MP under-display camera, which uses a mirror and transparent layer to snap photos, with less than stellar results. Samsung may instead be trying to opt for a different approach centered around a lower megapixel lens.

Blass also claims that both phones will have IPX8 ratings, which corroborates rumors that the foldable will offer water resistance this year. And the purportedly leaked image shows liquid splashes on the two phones, which would suggest that they are rather heavily water resistant. However, if the IPX8 rating is true, Samsung does not appear to have rated the phones for dust resistance.

It is not clear why this is the case, but it is probably much easier to protect the electronics inside from water than to seal the phone from dust.

As for S Pen support, Samsung has already confirmed that this is coming along for the ride; according to Blass, only the Z Fold 3 will support a stylus, which is consistent with previous rumors.

However, the phone is expected to support two different versions of the S Pen, namely the S Pen "Fold Edition" and the S Pen Pro, the latter having been announced in January with the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

Of course, all of this information is unverified, and despite Blass' reputation, we shouldn't bet too much on it just yet. Thankfully, Unpacked will take place on August 11, so we won't have to wait very long until we hear everything directly from Samsung.
