Galaxy Z Fold 3: Samsung confirms new multitasking feature, better durability, S pen and more

Samsung has made it official. New versions of the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip will be the centerpiece of the Galaxy Unpacked event on August 11, as the company continues to push new foldable devices.

T.M. Roh, Samsung's president and head of its mobile communications business, spilled the beans in a blog post published tonight (July 26), confirming that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 will be the focus of the company's virtual product launch next month. (Samsung did not use these specific names, but promised to show off its third-generation foldable devices.)

And that's not all Low revealed. We also got official confirmation of S Pen compatibility and new multitasking capabilities heading to Samsung's foldable devices.

If you've been paying attention to the steady stream of Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 rumors, this should come as no surprise. Still, it is enlightening to hear Samsung officially talk about what to expect and at the same time outline how this fits in with the overall strategy of the handset maker.

Samsung is "poised and ready to launch visionary, purposeful mobile technology for a better world," Roh writes. In a few weeks, we will unveil the latest and greatest Galaxy Z series to reshape the smartphone category and completely reimagine your experience."

Samsung promised to continue its push into folding phones this year, making the devices more accessible and attractive to a wider audience. Our third-generation foldable devices will usher in amazing new multitasking capabilities and enhanced durability for even more people around the world," Roh said. The Galaxy Z Flip, in particular, will be made of "more durable and stronger materials," Roh added.

The event will also feature what Samsung described as the first S Pen designed for foldable phones in mind - Roh did not specify whether its stylus will work with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 alone or whether it supports both new foldable phones He did not specify whether it supports both new foldable phones. S Pen compatibility was confirmed because leaked sources claim that the Galaxy Fold does not have a built-in slot for the S Pen and users will need a separate case to hold the stylus, as the Galaxy S21 Ultra supports the S Pen, Galaxy S21 Ultra owners must do so.

Prior to this year, the S Pen was only supported by Galaxy Note phones; bringing S Pen support to other devices is part of Samsung's strategy to extend the Note's most beloved feature to other product lines, Roh said. It also means that the Galaxy Note 21 will not appear this year - Roh confirmed that particular rumor that had been circulating since the beginning of the year.

More important than S Pen support is the announcement that more apps will be able to take advantage of the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip features. For example, Flex mode allows users to open part of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 or Galaxy Z Flip screen and split the screen into two different functional areas.

According to Roh, Samsung is "working with Google to enhance the foldable ecosystem with popular apps and services." No additional details are available, but we assume a slew of partner announcements from app makers during Samsung's August 11 event.

Roh's announcement focused on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip, but rumor has it that other products will be announced on stage next month: the Galaxy S21 FE, a smaller version of the Galaxy S21, along with two foldable devices on stage. The Galaxy Buds and a new version of the Galaxy Watch could also make their debut on stage, along with two foldable devices.

We will have to wait until August 11 to know the full extent of what Samsung plans to unveil. But if you wanted to hear about the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, the wait is just over.
