iPhone13 surprise - reportedly more than 100 million A15 chips were ordered

If you think the launch of the iPhone 13 will be a fluke, you may want to reconsider, as Apple is reportedly anticipating huge demand for the new iPhone.

Chinese site CNBeta (via MacRumors) reports that Apple has ordered over 100 million A15 Bionic chips for the iPhone 13. This information is reportedly based on supply chain sources and gives an idea of the potential scale of the iPhone 13 launch.

Earlier this month, Bloomberg reported that Apple wants to increase iPhone 13 production by 20% over last year. This suggests that the company expects even larger sales of the iPhone 13 compared to the iPhone 12. An earlier Bloomberg report said that Apple expects to produce 90 million units by the end of the year, up from 75 million for the iPhone 12.

The A15 Bionic chip will reportedly be made by TSMC and will be based on the same 5-nanometer architecture as the A14 chip, with a similar 6-core CPU, but this time there should be some upgrades The A15 is said to offer improved performance and power efficiency.

CNBeta speculates that Apple may "target battery life" in this year's launch, as it already leads other companies. However, the rumored Snapdragon 895 chip seems to be quite capable, and Samsung is working with AMD on a new Exynos chip that could power the Galaxy S22.

The good news is that Apple is also reportedly increasing the battery size in all four iPhone 13 models. After all, only the iPhone 12 Pro Max impressed us in our web-surfing battery tests. All three other models underwhelmed.

As for other upgrades, the iPhone 13 is rumored to offer a faster 5G modem, Wi-Fi 6E connectivity, and camera improvements like astrophotography mode and portrait mode video. The iPhone 13 series is also expected to have a 25% smaller notch that will be less obtrusive.

The iPhone 13 Pro series is rumored to be more exciting with the addition of a 120Hz ProMotion display and an always-on display. Additionally, both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max are said to offer an improved ultra-wide camera with a wider aperture and autofocus.

It won't take long to see if these rumors come to fruition, as the iPhone 13 is scheduled to debut this fall, possibly in September.
