GM's Super Cruise Is Getting a Big Update — What You Need To Know

Next year, General Motors plans to implement a major update to its autonomous driving feature, Super Cruise, which will be available in more vehicles than ever before.

There will be three main upgrades to Super Cruise, including lane changes, towing support, and an upgraded navigation system that will display Super Cruise-enabled roads. These will be available on six 2022 model year vehicles, including the powerful GMC Hummer EV, which is expected to arrive in the first quarter of 2022.

Super Cruise was introduced in 2017, but at the time it was limited to divided highways. Moreover, GM only offered it on the Cadillac CT6 sedan. It wasn't until 2019 that automakers began making major improvements to the technology and rolling it out to more vehicles, such as the Chevrolet Volt EUV.

GM aims to add the technology to a total of 22 models by 2023, but the first six vehicles to receive the technology will be the Cadillac Escalade, Cadillac CT4 and CT5, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, and Hummer EV for the 2022 model year. The Cadillac Relic EV and Hummer EV SUV versions will be upgraded the following year.

Currently, autonomous driving technology uses a mixture of LiDAR mapping data, high-precision GPS, cameras, and radar sensors to drive itself. Currently, Super Cruise offers adaptive cruise control and lane change on demand.

Furthermore, unlike many other autonomous driving assistance systems, it does not require the driver's hands off the wheel at all times. This is a good system, but it is not yet fully driverless autonomous driving.

Upgrades make the system more powerful and even easier to use. For example, when changing lanes, the car will be able to determine when it is best to change lanes and pass another vehicle, rather than waiting for a request from the driver.

Towing support is also likely to be a big win for truck owners, who will be able to sit back and take advantage of Super Cruise's autonomy while hauling loads. Similarly, the ability to see Super Cruise-enabled roads on in-car navigation systems means that drivers will be better able to plan their trips to require minimal hands-on driving.

The new Super Cruise feature will be available as an over-the-air update for drivers with the VIP Electrical Update. Sadly, cars that don't use this, like the Bolt EUV, will have to miss out.
